11. Antioxidants in Andean food and meals
Sammanfattning : Abstract The constant need to improve health and to prevent disease in Bolivia, especially in the Andean region with its extreme environmental conditions (high altitude and lower temperatures), motivated us to extend studies of antioxidant sources in foods and plants, since antioxidants are believed to have major health benefits. Spectrophotometric methods, such as ABTS (2, 2’- azinobis-3-ethylbenzotiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and FRAP (ferric reduction antioxidant power), were used to evaluate antioxidant activity. LÄS MER
12. Boosting potato defence against late blight : a study from field to molecule
Sammanfattning : For more than one century efforts has been made to obtain potato (Solanum tuberosum) cultivars resistant to late blight. However, introduced resistance has repeatedly been overcome by Phytophthora infestans (Mont) de Bary. LÄS MER
13. Structure-function studies of epoxide hydrolases
Sammanfattning : Epoxides are three-membered cyclic ethers formed in cells via several metabolic pathways. Epoxide hydrolases (EHs) are enzymes that hydrolyse epoxides to the corresponding diols. The main goal of this thesis was to investigate the structures of EHs from the alpha/beta-hydrolase family. LÄS MER
14. Genomic-led potato breeding
Sammanfattning : Most cultivated potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) are polyploids with tetrasomic inheritance (2n = 4x = 48), which makes breeding for new improved cultivars more complicated compared to diploid crops. LÄS MER
15. Carbon allocation in underground storage organs : studies on accumulation of starch, sugars and oil
Sammanfattning : By increasing knowledge of carbon allocation in underground storage organs and using the knowledge to improve such crops, the competitiveness of these types of storage organs can be strengthened. Starch is the most common storage compound in tubers and roots, but some crops accumulate compounds other than starch. LÄS MER
