1. Evaluation of a primary health care strategy implemented in a market-oriented health system : the case of Bogota, Colombia
Sammanfattning : Introduction: Despite Colombia having adopted a health system based on an insurance market, Bogota in 2004, as part of a left-wing government (elected for first time in the city), decided to implement a Primary Health Care (PHC) strategy to improve quality of life, level of population health and reduce health inequities. The PHC strategy has been implemented through the HomeHealth program by three consecutive governments over the last eight years in the context of continuous political tension stemming from differences between national and district health policies. 2. Withstanding austerity : economic crisis and health inequalities in Spain
Sammanfattning : Background: Along with the austerity measures introduced in many countries, the economic crisis affecting Europe since 2008 seems to have impacted many aspects of the health of the Spanish population and has had a negative effect on the provision health services. An increasing body of knowledge has shown a clear impact of the current crisis on suicidal behaviour and mental health, and a less consistent effect on physical health and access to healthcare. 3. Gender, health, the decisions we make and the actions we take
Sammanfattning : This thesis comprises of four self-contained papers that use both experimental and applied micro-econometric methods to explore different aspects of gender, health, the decisions we make, and the actions we take. In the first paper we investigate changes in psychiatric diagnoses and their income-related inequalities over time in Sweden and attempt to disentangle the development by decomposing changes over time in terms of population-level changes in education and migration background. Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of five self-contained, yet related, research papers, which all contribute to the economic literature on socioeconomic differences in health and health related behavior. The first two papers provide a compass in the discussion of how to measure health inequality and, more specifically, how to adjust measures and concepts when moving from an unbounded income variable to a bounded (or binary) health variable. 5. Before Being Born : Studies on Preconception Health and Unplanned Pregnancies in Low- and High-Income Settings
Sammanfattning : Nearly half of all pregnancies globally are unplanned. They represent a failure to meet individuals’ reproductive health needs and are associated with adverse maternal and child outcomes. Preconception and contraception care can help improving outcomes of pregnancies that are desired, and preventing those that are undesired. LÄS MER
