21. Integrating legumes in mixed crop-livestock systems in east Africa: Farmers' perceptions, ecosystem services and support for decision making
Sammanfattning : Challenges faced by smallholder farmers in east Africa include limited access to inputs, small farm sizes, and erratic rainfall patterns. Legume intensification and species diversification have been recommended for improving food and nutritional security, controlling soil erosion, improving soil fertility, supplying income and providing fuel. 22. Evaluation of local feed resources for hybrid catfish (Clarias macrocephalus x C. gariepinus) in smallholder fish farming systems in central Vietnam
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to examine the current feeding situation for fresh water fish in Central Vietnam, to evaluate the potential nutritive value of locally available feed resources for hybrid catfish (Clarias macrocephalus x C. gariepinus) and Nile tilapia, to determine the dietary requirement of lysine for hybrid catfish, to estimate the requirements for the other essential amino acids (EAA) by using ideal protein concept, and finally to evaluate the suitability of cassava leaf meal and shrimp head meal as a partial replacement for fish meal in the diet, without or with lysine supplementation, for hybrid catfish fingerlings. 23. Forage legumes as feed for pigs in smallholder production systems in the North of Lao PDR : production systems, forage biomass yield and protein nutrition
Sammanfattning : This thesis sought to characterise and understand existing smallholder pig production systems in the North of Lao PDR and to investigate the role of forage legumes as alternative protein sources for pigs in smallholder production systems. A survey found that there were three main pig rearing systems, free-scavenging, semi-scavenging and confinement (enclosures and pens), in the study areas. LÄS MER
24. Post-Harvest Losses, Intimate Partner Violence and Food Security in Tanzania
Sammanfattning : High levels of food losses occurring after harvesting offset the effort to increase food production. This situation increases the risk of food insecurity and low incomes among smallholder farmers. LÄS MER
25. Cotton and Cabaret : Domestic Economy and Female Agency in Burkina Faso
Sammanfattning : This study investigates the functioning of the domestic economy of smallholder cotton farmers with the overall aim of interrogating female agency, based on ethnographic fieldwork in Burkina Faso in the mid-1990s. The thesis addresses the following interrelated research questions: How were the smallholder domestic economies organized and how did they function? What were the mechanisms for economic inequality and social stratification? To what extent did women benefit from cotton farming? What economic strategies were available to women? And finally, how could female agency be conceptualized in relation to the domestic unit under male headship? Permeating the analysis is the insight that domestic economies of many West African farming societies consist of separate but interconnected economic domains, the “common” economy of the farming unit and the “individual” economies of its male and female members.
