1. Adopting Information Systems Perspectives from Small Organizations
Sammanfattning : Why do organizations adopt information systems? Is it just because of financial reasons, of concerns for efficiency? Or is it due to external pressures, such as competitor pressure, that an organization adopts an information system?And, how does the adoption take place? Is it a linear process, or is the process one of conflicts? Does a specific person govern this process, or do we have multiple parties involved? What happens if these conflicts occur among those involved? How does the organization move on and achieve a successful information system adoption?By investigating two organizations, one international academic journal and one South American manufacturing company, this thesis aims to investigate the whys and hows of information system adoption, and aims to contribute to the discourse on information system adoptions in small organizations – an often underrepresented segment in information system adoption literature.By adopting different theoretical lenses throughout the five research papers included, this body of work suggests that even when seemingly simple, information system adoptions can become rather complex. This trend is expected to have positive implications for democracy and effectiveness in global governance by improving participation, accountability, and representation, and by allowing IOs to draw on NSA resources to improve policy-making. 4. Designing Public Organizations and Institutions: Essays on Coordination and Incentives
Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of an introduction and four self-contained chapters that address issues of how organizations and institutions should be designed in order to provide adequate incentives and enable coordination. The first essay uses a multi-task principal-agent model to examine two reasons why coordination problems are common when public sector organizations share responsibilities: the incentives to coordinate resource allocation and the difficulties of measuring performance. 5. A managerial perspective on small-firm network organizations : an overview of the field and a study of practice
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents an explorative and descriptive study aimed at generating knowledge on small-firm network organizations, especially on the managerial aspects of these network organizations, the motives or expected benefits of participation in such networks, the management, and the development of these small-firm network organizations over time. The theoretical overview within this thesis briefly describes the way the network approach has been used in different disciplines, as well as the different theoretical approaches used in explaining this phenomenon in the network literature.
