1. Modeling normal and malignant hematopoiesis in vitro. To screen for extrinsic regulators and differentiation therapy
Sammanfattning : The incredible thing with blood stem cells, also known as hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), is that they can restore normal hematopoiesis in patients that need a new blood system. Since a prerequisite for successful transplantation is immune compatibility, it requires large donor registries to find a suitable match for a recipient. LÄS MER
2. Chemical attenuation of bacterial virulence : small molecule inhibitors of type III secretion
Sammanfattning : Despite the large arsenal of antibiotics available on the market, treatment of bacterial infections becomes more challenging in view of the fact that microbes develop resistance against existing drugs. There is an obvious need for novel drugs acting on both old and new targets in bacteria. LÄS MER
3. Small-Molecule Galectin Inhibitors - On Tweezers and Talosides
Sammanfattning : Abstract Work on the design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of galectin inhibitors is presented. The most significant results relate to the development of galactose-based arginine “tweezers” and taloside-based galectin inhibitors. The galectins are a β-galactoside binding protein family. LÄS MER
4. Preclinical tumor-immune modeling : For the identification of immunomodulatory drugs
Sammanfattning : For a long time, the field of cancer research was dominated by a tumor cell-centric view. That, however, changed once it became recognized that medical cancer treatment is largely influenced by the combined effect exerted on both cancer and immune cells. LÄS MER
5. Capillary electrophoresis mass spectrometry applied to structural proteomics and small molecule analysis
Sammanfattning : Capillary electrophoresis with mass spectrometric (CE–MS) detection offers a separation method without equal in terms of flexibility, utility, and cost efficiency. Here we demonstrate precisely this through the application of several laboratory-built CE–MS instruments for the separation of brain metabolites in non-primates, enantioselective separations of synthetic anesthetic metabolites in fractionated pony urine, application in structural proteomics workflows, and identification of exogenous alkaloid biotransformationproducts in human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
