1. Toward Anti-icing and De-icing Surfaces : Effects of Surface Topography and Temperature
Sammanfattning : Icing severely affects society, especially in the Nordic countries. Iceaccumulation can result in critical performance problems and safetyconcerns for instance in road, air and sea transportation, transmissionlines, marine and offshore structures, wind turbines and heat exchangers. 2. Electro-Interfacial Composition Control by Ionic Liquid Technology : Nanostructure, Self-Assembly, and Friction
Sammanfattning : Given the potential of ionic liquids (ILs) for batteries, supercapacitors and advanced lubricants, it is crucial to understand how electric fields affect the interfacial behaviour in IL-solvent systems and the intricate relationship between nanostructure and tribotronic properties. This thesis investigates the structural and compositional changes of ILs with different solvents at electrified interfaces. LÄS MER
3. Biolubricants and Biolubrication
Sammanfattning : The main objective of this thesis work was to gain understanding of the principles of biolubrication, focusing on synergistic effects between biolubricants. To this end surface force and friction measurements were carried out by means of Atomic Force Microscopy, using hydrophilic and hydrophobic model surfaces in salt solutions of high ionic strength (≈ 150 mM) in presence of different biolubricants. 4. The dynamic surface nature of calcite and its role in determining the adsorptive stability toward hydrophobizing carboxylic fatty acids
Sammanfattning : Calcium carbonate has attracted a lot of interest over the centuries. Nowadays, mainly as mineral pigment and filler, it has a wide use in technological applications ranging from paper, construction, polymers, and environmental solutions to consumer goods. LÄS MER
5. Investigating mucin interactions with diverse surfaces for biomedical applications
Sammanfattning : Mucous membranes are covered with mucus, a viscoelastic hydrogel that plays an essential role in their protection from shear and pathogens. The viscoelasticity of mucus is owing to mucins, a group of densely glycosylated proteins. LÄS MER
