  1. 1. Experimental studies on mouse slow and fast twitch muscles

    Författare :Filli Nurhussen; Anders Eriksson; Ulla Svantesson; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Other engineering mechanics; Övrig teknisk mekanik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with physiological and mechanical properties of fast and slow twitch mouse muscles. It discusses isometric, concentric and eccentric contractions of mouse extensor digitorum longus ('EDL') and soleus ('SOL') muscles. LÄS MER

  2. 2. The role of Six1 in muscle progenitor cells and the establishment of fast-twitch muscle fibres

    Författare :Hanna Nord; Jonas von Hofsten; Freek van Eeden; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Myogenesis; zebrafish; muscle fibre; patterning; fmyhc; myl1; Six1; Pax7;

    Sammanfattning : Myogenesis is the process of skeletal muscle tissue formation where committed muscle progenitor cells differentiate into skeletal muscle fibres. Depending on the instructive cues the muscle progenitor cells receive they will differentiate into specific fibre types with different properties. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Human muscle response to sprint exercise in a gender perspective

    Författare :Mona Esbjörnsson Liljedahl; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Anaerobic; Performance; Wingate-test; muscle biopsy; Adenine nucleotides; hormones; glycogen; type I fibres; type II fibres; fast twitch; slow twitch; muscle morphology; men; women; sprint training;

    Sammanfattning : Anaerobic performance, muscle characteristics and acute and chronic response to sprint exercise were studied in physically active healthy women (n=35; age 24) and men (n=38; age 25). The aims of the present study were to: 1) Establish if women possess lower oxidative and glycolytic capacity, higher proportion of type I fibres and smaller type II fibre areas in relation to type I fibre areas in thigh musculature than men. 4. 4. Effects of ageing on contractility and myosin composition of rat and man skeletal muscles and muscle cells : with special reference to muscle adaptability

    Författare :Xiaopeng Li; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :ageing; hyperthyroidism; skeletal muscle; single skinned fibre; isometric twitch; slack test; shortening velociy; electrophoresis; myosin isoform; immunocytochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis were to characterize the effects of ageing on the contractile and biochemical properties of fast- and slow-twitch skeletal muscles at the whole muscle and single fibre level in an attempt to improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the age-related impairments of muscle fibres. Specific interest was in the adaptability of skeletal muscle and the regulation of speed of shortening at single-cell level in the rat and man. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Physiological changes in mice deficient in different subtypes of thyroid hormone receptors : a focus on studies of heart and muscle

    Författare :Catarina Johansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :heart rate; ECG; body temperature; [beta]-adrenergic receptor density; thyroid hormone; isometric twitch; SERCa;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of these studies was to determing the specific roles of the different subtypes of thyroid hormone receptors (TR), with focus on heart and muscle function, by using mice deficient in TR[alpha]1, TR[beta] (both TR[beta]1 and TR[beta]2 subtypes) and TR[alpha]1/[beta]. For this purpose, new techniques were set up to study various physiological parameters in these mice. LÄS MER
