1. Colloidal Processing and Alignment of Wood-Based Dispersions and Hybrid Functional Foams
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents novel methods and approaches for designing, preparing/fabricating, and characterizing wood-based nanomaterials. It investigates how modifications in structure, process variables, and composition can enhance functional properties. LÄS MER
2. Micro-structural based acoustic modelling of anisotropic open cell materials
Sammanfattning : A method for the calculation of the acoustic performance of open-cell foammaterials is discussed. From a known micro-structural geometry and theconstituent material, the relevant acoustic properties are computed using apreviously published analytical method for the calculation of the dynamicdrag impedance and a previously published method for the calculation of theelastic moduli. 3. Sustainable Biobased Protein Superabsorbents from Agricultural Co-Products
Sammanfattning : The preparation of sustainable protein superabsorbents from agricultural industry side-streams is reported. Wheat gluten (WG), a co-product from the ethanol/starch industry, was processed into foams with sponge-like behavior and high liquid uptake. LÄS MER
4. Non-linear mechanics of nanocellulose foams
Sammanfattning : There has been a growing interest in nano-fibrillar cellulose (NFC), which has been fuelled not merely by the advantages it presents in terms of strength to weight ratio and biodegradability, but also owing to the recent advances in production techniques. NFC foam is essentially a hierarchical structure, wherein nanofibrils account for the smallest scale, with the pores/cell walls forming the meso scale. LÄS MER
5. High Clay Content Cellulose Nanocomposites for Mechanical Performance and Fire Retardancy
Sammanfattning : Materials based on wood can offer sustainable alternatives to fossil-based plastics and composites, and show interesting mechanical properties. However, the issue of their flammability is generally unresolved. In this thesis, eco-friendly, fire retardant clay-cellulose nanofibril materials are investigated. LÄS MER
