21. Immediate skin-to-skin contact for very preterm and low birth weight infants : from newborn physiology to mortality reduction
Sammanfattning : There is a contrast between the incidence of low birth weight and the contents and outcomes of neonatal care in high- versus middle- and low-income countries. Most of the neonatal deaths worldwide are attributed to low birth weight, occur within the first three postnatal days and can be prevented without intensive care. LÄS MER
22. Aspects of neonatal intensive care and anesthesia : Thermal balance and respiratory management
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on four articles originating from three studies conducted in the neonatal intensive care unit and the children’s operating deparment at Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden. The overall aim was to obtain new knowledge about thermal balance and care environment in extremely preterm infants during skin-to-skin care (SSC), evaluate different methods of intraoperative monitoring of carbon dioxide (CO2), and to investigate how different levels of inhaled oxygen affect infants’ oxygenation during anesthesia and surgery. 23. Modelling of Terahertz Planar Schottky Diodes
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the modelling of THz planar Schottky diodes, focusing on analyses of the geometry- dependent parasitics and the diode chip thermal management. Moving towards higher operating frequencies, the electromagnetic couplings pose significant limitations on the diode performance. LÄS MER
24. Molecular organization and in situ assembly of the human skin barrier
Sammanfattning : A deficient skin barrier function is a characteristic feature of skin diseases such as eczema, psoriasis and the ichtyoses. A malformation of the lipid matrix might be a major factor in barrier deficient skin disease. LÄS MER
25. Eosinophilic dermatosis implications of skin-commensal bacteria and antimicrobial peptides and proteins at birth
Sammanfattning : At birth, the newborn infant is transferred from a sterile life in utero to an earthly life in coexistence with microbes. This transition includes the potential danger of a microbial invasion through the epithelial linings, and the infant must find a balance between elimination of harmful pathogens and cooperation with microorganisms that are of benefit.
