  1. 6. Skeletal muscle responses to physical activity in health and metabolic disease

    Författare :Jonathon Alexander Smith; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Sedentary lifestyles, characterised by a lack of physical activity and prolonged periods of sitting, have been linked to reductions in whole-body metabolic flexibility and the increased risk of metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes. This can be attributed, at least partially, to the direct negative effects of physical inactivity on skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity, oxidative capacity, and overall metabolic health. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Effects of anti-inflammatory drugs on human skeletal muscle adaptations to resistance training

    Författare :Mats Lilja; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Previous studies in young adults suggest that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may impair early skeletal muscle responses to exercise. Whether chronic use of NSAIDs affects skeletal muscle adaptations to resistance training in young adults remains uncertain. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Vascular effects of prostacyclin in cat skeletal muscle and in the traumatised rat brain

    Författare :Peter Bentzer; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; reflection coefficient; cerebral blood flow; hydraulic conductivity; oedema; capilary filtration coefficient; endothelin-1; ATP-dependent potassium channels; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Disturbances in microvascular function may be important for tissue damage in many disease states. Prostacyclin, a substance produced by endothelial cells, is important for the maintenance of normal vascular homeostasis and is a potential drug for treatment of microvascular dysfunction, but indications and optimal dosage remains to be established. 4. 9. Identification of abnormally expressed genes in skeletal muscle contributing to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes

    Författare :Xudong Huang; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Endocrinology; secreting systems; diabetology; Endokrinologi; gene expression; high-fat intake; RT-PCR; mitochondrial genes; cathepsin L; Shc; IRS-2; IRS-1; GS; cDNA differential display; Insulin resistance; type 2 diabetes; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Sammanfattning : The metabolic defects of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes can result from changes in gene expression and protein functions due to genetic and environmental influences. The aim of this study was to identify abnormally expressed genes associated with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes, and further to test whether possible defects are inherited or acquired. 5. 10. The role of exercise and exercise-related factors in the control of mitochondrial oxidative function

    Författare :Brandon Walsh; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Skinned fibers; permeabilized fibers; skeletal muscle; exercise; mitochondria; ADP sensitivity; aerobic metabolism; training; eccentric; high intensity; creatine; phosphocreatine; inorganic phosphate; hydrogen ions;

    Sammanfattning : The effects of exercise and exercise-related factors on the control of mitochondrial oxidative function were investigated in human and rat skeletal muscle. Oxidative function was assessed through the measurement of oxygen consumption in chemically permeabilized (skinned) fibers. LÄS MER
