  1. 16. Microbial Metagenomics : A Tale of the Dead and the Living

    Författare :Katarzyna Zaremba-Niedźwiedzka; Siv G.E. Andersson; Jeroen Raes; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; single-cell genomics; single cell; fossil metagenome; freshwater metagenome; LD12;

    Sammanfattning : It is a microbial world we live in: microbes outnumber other organisms by several orders of magnitude, and they have great importance for the environment. However, environmental microbes are notoriously difficult to grow in the laboratory, and using culture independent techniques is necessary to expand our view. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Quantitative bioimaging in single cell signaling

    Författare :Kristoffer Bernhem; Hjalmar Brismar; Anita Aperia; Lena Scott; Christian Eggeling; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Super resolution imaging; fluoresence; bioimaging; cells; FRET; cluster analysis; labeling; image analysis.;

    Sammanfattning : Imaging of cellular samples has for several hundred years been a way for scientists to investigate biological systems. With the discovery of immunofluorescence labeling in the 1940’s and later genetic fluorescent protein labeling in the 1980’s the most important part in imaging, contrast and specificity, was drastically improved. 3. 18. Illumination in single cell optical microscopy studies - friend and foe

    Författare :Kristofer Bodvard; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; yeast; transcription factors; signalling; fluorescence microscopy; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; light-induced stress; phototoxicity; single cell imaging;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on how to use light as a biological stress factor in optical microscopy experiments and simultaneously use the illumination to image the spatial and temporal protein dynamics in single yeast cells. The stress responses to environmental changes other than light have been extensively investigated in budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, often using techniques based on population averages. 4. 19. Towards quantitative single cell analysis using optical tweezers and microfluidics

    Författare :Emma Eriksson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Optical tweezers; holographic optical tweezers; microfluidics; lab-on-a-chip; fluorescence microscopy; spatial light modulator; single cell analysis; quantitative systems biology; GFP; Saccharomyces cerevisiae;

    Sammanfattning : Experiments on single cells have the potential to uncover information that would not be possible to obtain with traditional biological techniques, which only reflect the average behavior of a population of cells. In the averaging process, information regarding heterogeneity and cellular dynamics, that may give rise to a nondeterministic behavior at the population level, is lost. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Single Cell Studies of Glycolytic Oscillations Using Microfluidics and Optical Tweezers

    Författare :Anna-Karin Gustavsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Optical manipulation; microfluidics; fluorescence microscopy; single cell imaging; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; glycolysis; oscillations; NADH;

    Sammanfattning : The complex set of reactions in metabolism has been extensively studied in populations with millions of cells, but much information can still be gained by studying the heterogeneous metabolic behaviour in individual cells. The first part of energy metabolism is called glycolysis and is very similar in mammalian cells, such as human cells, and in yeast cells. LÄS MER
