1. Building crystals out of crystals : Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles and self-assembled mesocrystals
Sammanfattning : This thesis is focused on the fabrication and characterization of self-assembled arrays of magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4, γ-Fe2O3 and Fe1-xO) nanoparticles. The synthesis of spherical and cubic iron oxide nanocrystals, with sizes between 5 and 30 nm and narrow size distributions, is demonstrated, along with a rigorous morphological characterization of the cubic nanoparticles. 2. Complex Oxide Photonic Crystals
Sammanfattning : Microphotonics has been offering a body of ideas to prospective applicationsin optics. Among those, the concept of photonic integrated circuits (PIC’s) has recently spurred a substantial excitement into the scientific community. Relisation of the PIC’s becomes feasible as the size shrinkage of the optical elements is accomplished. LÄS MER
3. Infrared spectroscopy studies of adsorption and photochemistry on TiO2 surfaces : From single crystals to nanostructured materials
Sammanfattning : TiO2 based photocatalysis is a green nanotechnology that can be used for removal of pollutants from water and air, as well as making synthetic fuels from water and carbon dioxide. Said photocatalysis has received major research interests during the last decades. LÄS MER
4. Towards Single-Ion Detection and Single-Photon Storage in Rare-Earth-Ion-Doped Crystals
Sammanfattning : Solid materials doped with rare-earth ions are considered an attractive platform for quantum information applications. One of the main reasons for this is the exceptionally long optical and hyperfine coherence times of the 4fn states, due to the shielding provided by the outer lying 5s and 5p electrons. LÄS MER
5. Adsorption and reactions of sulfur dioxide on TiO2 surfaces : Fundamental studies on single crystals and nanoparticles
Sammanfattning : Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a material that is well-known among researchers in environmental science but is perhaps less well-known by the general public. It is commonly used in white paint because of its ability to scatter visible light, and for this reason it is manufactured at a large industrial scale. LÄS MER
