6. Serum lipoprotein(a) in relation to ischemic heart disease and associated risk factors
Sammanfattning : Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) consists of an LDL-like particle and the specific protein apo(a), which is very similar to plasminogen. Apo(a) contains repeated kringle structures and a serine protease domain, which cannot be activated by t-PA. Lp(a) is considered to be a predictor for atherosclerotic disease. LÄS MER
7. Molecular Mechanisms of Graves' Ophthalmopathy. A focus on smoking and radioiodine
Sammanfattning : Graves’ disease (GD) is an autoimmune disease characterized by hyperthyroidism and is caused by an interplayof genetic and environmental factors. One-third of patients with GD develop Graves’ ophthalmopathy (GO). Keyprocesses in the pathogenesis of GO are inflammation and adipogenesis in orbital tissue. LÄS MER
8. Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome : a disorder of cholesterol synthesis : diagnosis, treatment and pathogenetic aspects
Sammanfattning : In 1993 it was first suggested that the Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS), described almost 30 years earlier as a malformation syndrome, is caused by defective synthesis of cholesterol. Hypocholesterolaemia and accumulation of the immediate precursor 7-dehydrocholesterol was consistent with deficient activity of the enzyme in the last step of the synthesis, 7-dehydrocholesterol-7-reductase. 9. Targeting viral induced TSLP - an airway treatment opportunity
Sammanfattning : Respiratory viral infections cause exacerbations of asthma and COPD that cannot be effectively treated today. Thymic Stromal Lymphopoietin (TSLP) is an upstream epithelial cytokine linking the innate and adaptive immune system. Viral stimuli induce epithelial overexpression of TSLP in asthma and COPD. 10. Role of cholesterol metabolism in hepatic steatosis and glucose tolerance
Sammanfattning : The liver is the central organ for lipid, lipoprotein and glucose homeostasis, thus hepatic metabolic disturbances can predispose individuals to develop cardiometabolic disorders (CMD) such as atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).The overall aim of this thesis was to expand the knowledge on how genetic and pharmacological interventions on hepatic and intestinal cholesterol metabolism could affect the pathophysiology of CMD.
