1. Silicon nitride based coatings for biomedical implants
Sammanfattning : Silicon nitride-based coatings have been proposed as a means to reduce the release of metal ions and debris from metallic implants. This reduction in combination with the biocompatible debris from silicon nitride could result in a less adverse immune response. LÄS MER
2. Ultralow-loss silicon nitride waveguides for nonlinear optics
Sammanfattning : The field of nonlinear optics relies on the interaction between high-intensity optical waves and nonlinear media. An integrated waveguide with large refractive index contrast allows to highly confine optical waves in a sub-μm^2 area, thus enhancing the optical intensity. LÄS MER
3. Silicon nitride-based integrated components for optical communication
Sammanfattning : To follow the trend of the data traffic and to limit the size of the hyperscale data centers, communication solutions offering small footprint, low cost and low power consumption are needed. Optical interconnects used in data centers are mostly short reach (approximately 100 m) based on GaAs-based 850 nm vertical-cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) and OM4 multimode fibers (MMF). 4. Functional properties of silicon nitride based materials for joint applications
Sammanfattning : Total hip and total knee replacements are generally successful procedures for patients suffering with pain due to bone fracture or diseases affecting the joints. However, the materials that are commonly used still have limitations. In particular, corrosion products and wear debris may give rise to negative body reactions. LÄS MER
5. The silicon nitride reaction-bonding process
Sammanfattning : The so called Reaction-Bonded Silicon Nitride (RBSN) materials are usually produced through the chemical reaction of silicon powder compacts in a nitriding atmosphere. This nitriding reaction is strongly exothermic and much heat is generated, which may cause to overheating, even melting of the powder compacts so to hinder the further reaction due to the reduction of specific area of the powder compacts, especially when the nitridation involves a rather large mass of silicon.
