1. Through the Mirror : Perspectives of Brand Heritage
Sammanfattning : The role of brands in contemporary society has in a fundamental way shifted the earlier balance of power in terms of consumers’ identity, in a sense creating a society where we are what we consume. This change has not only created enormous values centered around everyday brands, but also made brands into cultural objects interacting in a space earlier exclusive to such high-brow areas such as religion, science and the fine arts. 2. Predictions of Aerodynamically Induced Wind Noise Around Ground Vehicles
Sammanfattning : Over the last decade wind noise has with few exceptions consistently generated a constant or even growing level of customer complaints to automotive companies world-wide. This can partly be explained by a relatively greater focus on engine, power-train and tire noise combined with a growing need to reduce weight in future cars. LÄS MER
3. Factors affecting the pharmacological treatment of bipolar disorder
Sammanfattning : Background: In patients with bipolar disorder, long-term treatment with mood-stabilisers is often required to prevent manic and depressive episodes. At present, our knowledge remains limited regarding factors that influence the outcomes of mood-stabiliser treatment. LÄS MER
4. Target and Laser Pulse Optimization for Laser-Driven Ion Acceleration
Sammanfattning : The research presented in this thesis is primarily focused on experimental investigations of laser-driven ion acceleration from solid targets via the target normal sheath acceleration mechanism. In particular, ways of optimizing the absorption of the laser pulse energy by free plasma electrons in the target, or modifying the shape of the accelerating electron sheath were addressed. LÄS MER
5. Genetic factors and the role of the NMDA receptor in pain modulation and the effect of opioids
Sammanfattning : Pain perception and the response to opioid analgesics are determined by a number of factors, among which genetic variability and the activation of the NMDA-receptor for glutamate play an important role. The effects of two clinically available NMDA-receptor antagonists, ketamine (KET) and dextromethorphan (DEX), were evaluated on an animal model of acute nociception, the hot plate test, and on human experimental acute ischemic pain.
