1. Heat Flow in Building Components, Experiment and Analysis
Sammanfattning : Three building components exposed to natural climate were studied: a dynamic insulation in the ceiling of a house, an outer wall and one window in the same wall. The term dynamic insulation implies that part of the inlet or exhaust air passes through the insulation of a house. LÄS MER
2. Photoreceptors in experimental retinal cell transplants
Sammanfattning : The main objective of this thesis was to investigate the fate of photoreceptor cells when using different strategies for retinal cell transplantation. Comparing transplantation of fragments of embryonic retina with cell suspensions of the same tissue we found that transplantation of fragments of embryonic retina result in mature transplants with a higher degree of cellular organization than transplantation of cell suspensions of embryonic retina. 3. Outdoor heat in urban areas - Model development and applications
Sammanfattning : Heat waves and high outdoor air temperature can lead to heat stress with negative implications for human health and wellbeing such as heat stroke, heat cramps, dehydration and in extreme cases death. The urban population is at higher risk of such outcomes because of the generally warmer urban climate. LÄS MER
4. Uncertainties in tropical precipitation and radiative feedbacks under climate change
Sammanfattning : Clouds have a significant impact on climate. They contribute to controlling the planetary energy balance, and the precipitation distribution. Global Climate Models (GCMs) designed to reproduce the state of the climate system, however, have difficulties representing clouds. LÄS MER
5. An investigation into ocean thermodynamics and water-mass transformation
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents oceanic budgets of potential temperature, salinity and buoyancy as well as a novel way of diagnosing water-mass transformation in salinity-temperature space. The buoyancy of seawater is given by a nonlinear function of temperature, salinity and pressure and much of the work in this thesis revolves around how fluxes of heat and salinity influence the buoyancy of seawater through these nonlinearities.
