1. Evolutionary genomics in Corvids : – From single nucleotides to structural variants
Sammanfattning : Heritable genetic variation is the raw material of evolution and can occur in many different forms, from altering single nucleotides to rearranging stretches of millions at once. DNA mutations that result in phenotypic differences are the basis upon which natural selection can act, leading to a shift of the frequency of those mutations. LÄS MER
2. Parallel target selection by trinucleotide threading
Sammanfattning : DNA is the code for all life. Via intermediary RNA the information encoded by the genome is relayed to proteins executing the various functions in a cell. Together, this repertoire of inherently linked biological macromolecules determines all characteristics and features of a cell. LÄS MER
3. Assessing the structural and dynamical properties of concentrated solutions of the disordered proteins Histatin 5 and its tandem repeat
Sammanfattning : Intrinsically disordered proteins are distinguished by a lack of distinct three-dimensional structure, existing instead as an ensemble of heterogenous structures. In this research, the effect of crowding on these proteins is investigated using a combined approach of experiment and computer simulation, mainly using coarse-grained simulation models to make simulation computationally feasible at the high concentration conditions crowding is displayed. 4. Repetitive DNA in search of a function - a study of telomeric and centromeric sequences in Chironomus
Sammanfattning : Repetitive DNA is quantitatively the main component of telomeres and centromeres, structures responsible for maintenance of the eukaryotic chromosome. The telomere is the specialized nucleoprotein complex that terminates linear chromosomes. LÄS MER
5. Methods and applications in DNA sequence alignments
Sammanfattning : DNA sequence alignment is one of the most common bioinformatics tasks. Alignment analysis for eukaryotic genomes is challenging because the datasets are large. Repeat sequences also make the analysis difficult. This thesis describes new methods which we have developed for DNA sequence alignment that address these problems. LÄS MER
