7. Heparin-binding protein and organ failure in critical illness
Sammanfattning : Background: For patients severely ill enough to require care in an intensive care unit (ICU), both the disease itself (e.g. bacteria in the blood in sepsis or fractures after trauma) and effects of the immune system can cause circulatory, pulmonary, or renal dysfunction. Leukocytes play a dominant role in the immune system. LÄS MER
8. Effect of shock wave therapy on longitudinal bone growth and growth plate cartilage
Sammanfattning : Aim: The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the potential for radial shock wave treatment (rSWT) to regulate growth plate chondrogenesis and longitudinal bone growth. It was based on the hypothesis that the effects are dose-dependent in a bimodal response pattern where low-energy rSWT will increase chondrocyte proliferation/hypertrophy, and thereby bone growth, while high frequency/energy rSWT will induce chondrocyte apoptosis and thereby, premature growth plate closure. 9. Pathogenesis and immunotherapy of streptococcal septicemia and shock
Sammanfattning : Streptococei have been recognized as important causes of severe sepsis. Increased frequencies of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome caused by group A streptococcus (GAS) have been noted worldwide during the last 15 years. LÄS MER
10. Antibacterial Effect and Inflammatory Response in Relation to Antibiotic Treatment of Sepsis
Sammanfattning : Sepsis defines as life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. The importance of early administration of antibiotics in septic shock is undisputed, but the optimal antibiotic choice remains uncertain. LÄS MER
