1. Engineering Yeast Metabolism for Production of Sesquiterpenes
Sammanfattning : Sesquiterpenes belong to the large and diverse group of isoprenoids, which are ubiquitous in the plant kingdom and have various applications in the chemical industry as fragrances, pharmaceuticals and as substitutes for petroleum-based gasoline, diesel and jet fuels. In this project, production of sesquiterpenes was studied in Saccharomyces cerevisiae using farnesene as an example with the objective to gain new insights into the synthesis of these compounds and to evaluate different metabolic engineering strategies. 2. Exploring evolutionary and chemical space using chemoinformatic tools and traditional methods in pharmacognosy
Sammanfattning : The number of new drugs coming to the market is declining while interest in lead discovery from natural resources is seeing a revival. Although methods for isolation and identification of natural products have advanced tremendously, methods for selection of potential leads have fallen behind. LÄS MER
3. Metabolic Engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for Sesquiterpene Production
Sammanfattning : Industrial biotechnology aims to develop robust “microbial cell factories”, to produce an array of added value chemicals presently dominated by petrochemical processes. The exploitation of an efficient microbial production as sustainable technology has an important impact for our society. LÄS MER
4. Characterization of Secondary Metabolites from Natural Sources
Sammanfattning : Natural products have contributed for many years to the development of new medicines for the treatment of diseases. Their structural diversity and complexity have inspired chemists to produce interesting compounds with pharmaceutical use. LÄS MER
5. Natural Products from Cameroonian Medicinal Plants
Sammanfattning : Natural product chemistry is a main research area in Cameroon, as well as for the division of Bioorganic Chemistry at Lund Institute of Technology. A review of the results obtained recently with Cameroonian medicinal plants shows that a large number of compounds, many with complex structures, have been isolated and characterised, and the work presented in this thesis is part of this effort.
