  1. 1. HIV-1 variability in relation to host defence mechanisms and disease outcome

    Författare :Marianne Jansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :HIV-1; peptides; seroreactivity; genetic variability; pediatric; disease outcome; biological phenotypes; B-chemokines; coreceptors; V3; V2.;

    Sammanfattning : Genetic variability is a major characteristic of HIV-1. Virus variants evolve rapidly, not only globally, but also within single individuals as a result of an error-prone reverse transcriptase, a rapid virus population turnover and selective pressure from the host. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Epidemiological and Bacteriological Aspects of Spotted Fever Rickettsioses in Humans, Vectors and Mammals in Sweden

    Författare :Karin Elfving; Kenneth Nilsson; Eva Hjelm; Björn Olsen; Tomas Bergström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Rickettsia helvetica; ticks; cultivation; serology; polymerase chain reaction PCR ; DNA sequencing; western blot; electron microscopy; meningitis; seroprevalence;

    Sammanfattning : Rickettsiae are obligate intracellular gram-negative bacteria transmitted by arthropod vectors. Rickettsiae sometimes cause disease in humans, typically with high fever, headache and occasionally an eschar.In Sweden, Rickettsia helvetica, belonging to the spotted fever group, is the only tick-transmitted rickettsia found free in nature. 3. 3. Role of Genital Infections on pregnancy outcome with emphasis on syphilis

    Författare :Elena Maria Pereira Folgosa; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; HIV; chorioamnionitis; syphilis; Mozambique; stillbirth; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Sammanfattning : OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the role of genital infections in last trimester pre-labour foetal death and the role and aetiology of chorioamnionitis in stillbirth in Maputo, Mozambique. To determine the role of current syphilis as a risk factor for foetal death in Maputo and the prevalence and risk factors for syphilis and HIV infection in displaced pregnant women in rural Zambezia province. 4. 4. Evaluation of vaccine candidates for HIV prevention in Tanzania

    Författare :Frank Msafiri; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Background: This thesis describes the capability of an HIV-1 DNA and HIV-1 modified vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA) prime boost vaccination strategy to elicit immune responses known to correlate with reduced risk of HIV infection. Additionally, it describes the confounding effect of vaccine-induced HIV antibodies on the performance of HIV testing algorithms in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the recruitment and preparation of a cohort of female sex workers (FSW) for potential participation in an HIV vaccine efficacy trial. 5. 5. LYME BORRELIOSIS Detection and identification of the infecting genotype

    Författare :Katharina Ornstein; Sektion III; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Parasitologi människa och djur ; Parasitology human and animal ; Infektioner; Infections; PCR; genospecies; Lyme borreliosis; Borrelia burgdorferi; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Lyme borreliosis is caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, a bacterium with a parasitic life-style, which is transmitted between hosts by the Ixodes tick-vector. Humans will incidentally become infected. The resulting illness can involve the skin, nervous system, joints and heart. LÄS MER
