1. Evolution of olfaction in Lepidoptera and Trichoptera : Gene families and antennal morphology
Sammanfattning : In moths, females produce sex pheromone compounds to attract males over a long distance for mating. The antennae of moths and many other insects have specialized odorant receptors (ORs), called pheromone receptors (PRs), to sense the pheromone compounds and they group in a monophyletic clade (PR clade). 2. Odour-mediated nectar foraging in the silver Y moth, Autographa gamma
Sammanfattning : It is well established that floral odours play a significant role in the nectar foraging behaviour in Lepidoptera and other insect orders. Floral odour may elicit searching, alighting and feeding behaviours alone or in concert with visual stimuli. LÄS MER
3. Neural Interfaces to the Odour World of Scarab Beetles
Sammanfattning : Antennal detection and central nervous integration of behaviourally relevant odours in scarab beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) was investigated, using the two Japanese scarabs Anomala cuprea and Phyllopertha diversa (Rutelinae), and the Central African fruit chafer Pachnoda marginata (Cetoniinae) as model species. Electrophysiological single cell recordings in A. LÄS MER
4. Olfactory mechanisms of host selection in phytophagous insects : behavior, neuron, and receptor
Sammanfattning : The most challenging tasks for phytophagous insects are the location and selection of mates, food sources, and oviposition sites, all crucial for survival and reproduction. To perform these tasks insects rely largely on their sense of smell (olfaction). LÄS MER
5. Gall midge olfaction and its role in speciation
Sammanfattning : With the swede midge (Contarinia nasturtii) as our main model species, we study two types of olfactory cues that are of importance for gall midges: 1) the pheromones emitted by the female to attract the male; 2) and the host plant volatiles that the females use when finding a host for oviposition. We found that both the blend of compounds and the enantioisomeric form are important for male attraction in the wind tunnel and in the field. LÄS MER
