16. Design for all Senses. Accessible Spaces for Visually Impaired Citizens
Sammanfattning : The central purpose of this study is to contribute to our knowledge of designing in a way that can be supported by the knowledge of the situation, and by the experience and expectations of those who are affected by design. In this case it means to enable us to find methods that can support the development of design actions to improve the accessibility of public open urban places for visually impaired persons, enhancing their perception and understanding of space, increasing their possibilities of orientating and taking independent decisions, and enabling them participate in the city life. 17. Challenges with Driverless and Unattended Train Operations
Sammanfattning : Demand for transportation continues to increase, for both freight and passenger services. One of the most energy-efficient modes of transportation is rail. One solution to increase the attractiveness of rail transport is to introduce automatic train operation (ATO) with a high grade of automation (GoA). LÄS MER
18. Itch and Pain Inhibitory Mechanisms in Humans - evidence for a differential control of nociceptive senses
Sammanfattning : It is known that stimulation of thin nerve afferents can inhibit itch and pain and that the nociceptive systems have a detailed topographical organisation, with subsystems exhibiting specific excitatory and inhibitory receptive fields. On this basis, a new technique was developed, termed Cutaneous Field Stimulation (CFS), that electrically stimulates thin nerve fibers innervating specific skin fields. LÄS MER
19. An object's smell in the multisensory brain : how our senses interact during olfactory object processing
Sammanfattning : Object perception is a remarkable and fundamental cognitive ability that allows us to interpret and interact with the world we are living in. In our everyday life, we constantly perceive objects–mostly without being aware of it and through several senses at the same time. LÄS MER
20. The sensational hand. Clinical assessment after nerve repair
Sammanfattning : Following the transection and repair of major nerve trunks in the forearm, the functional outcome is influenced by mechanisms in the peripheral, as well as in the central nervous system. In the present thesis the interest is focused on assessment of the outcome after nerve repair, central nervous factors influencing the outcome, and sense substitution to compensate for sensory loss.
