  1. 1. Contaminated sediments: Methods to assess release and toxicity of organic chemical mixtures

    Författare :Lukas Mustajärvi; Anna Sobek; Jarkko Akkanen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sediment; Hydrophobic organic contaminants; Flux; Bioturbation; Passive sampling; Passive dosing; Mixture toxicity; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Bottom sediments around the world store large amounts of legacy hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), forming mixtures of unknown chemical composition. Primary emissions to the environment of many HOCs have been reduced as a consequence of regulation. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Sediment remediation using activated carbon: amending knowledge gaps

    Författare :Robert A. Rämö; Jonas S. Gunnarsson; Agnes M. L. Karlson; Francisco J. A. Nascimento; Barbara Beckingham; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sediment contamination; sediment remediation; sorbent amendment; activated carbon; benthic community; macroinvertebrates; Baltic Sea; Marine Ecotoxicology; marin ekotoxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : Many coastal sediments have accumulated large quantities of contaminants from past anthropogenic activities and now act as a secondary emission source of legacy pollutants to coastal ecosystems. New sediment remediation strategies are needed to address widespread sediment pollution. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Uptake and toxicity of brominated flame retardants and pesticides : Studies on littoral organisms and model communities

    Författare :Kerstin Gustafsson; Nils Kautsky; Kirsten Christoffersen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aquatic ecotoxicology; ecological interactions; indirect effects; model community studies; toxicity; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, brackish and freshwater littoral model communities (microcosms) of varying size and complexity were used to study the effects of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and pesticides. The brackish water microcosms consisted of natural water, sediment and associated organisms, while the larger freshwater microcosms also contained submersed macrophytes (Elodea canadensis). LÄS MER

  4. 4. Biomarkers and bioindicators of hypoxia and sediment toxicity in Monoporeia affinis

    Författare :Marie Löf; Brita Sundelin; Tina Elfwing; Elena Gorokhova; Ingela Dahllöf; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biomarkers; Bioindicators; Embryo aberrations; Hypoxia; Contaminated sediment; PAHs; PCBs; Metals; Baltic Sea; Amphipods; Monoporeia affinis; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Two of the most pressing environmental problems in the Baltic Sea are pollution and oxygen deficiency. The aim of this doctoral thesis was to evaluate a set of biomarkers and reproductive variables in the amphipod Monoporeia affinis to test their suitability as indicators of exposure to contaminants and hypoxia. 5. 5. A Deep Dive into Sediments : Exploring approaches to assess environmental risks and achieving environmental goals in management of contaminated sediments in Sweden

    Författare :Peter Bruce; Clare Bradshaw; Yvonne Ohlsson; Anna Sobek; Sabine Apitz; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sediment; risk assessment; risk evaluation; risk management; contaminants; regulations; weight of evidence; line of evidence; environmental goals; environmental management; guidelines; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Contaminated sediments are common, especially near urban and industrialized areas, and they can have negative ecological effects. In three studies, I explore the challenges for environmental management of contaminated sediments, focusing on environmental risk assessment (ERA) in Sweden. LÄS MER
