11. Acoustic characterization of submarine geomorphological features in the Polar Oceans
Sammanfattning : Marine glacial environments contain unique seafloor features resulting from the dynamic glacial processes. Studying these submarine geomorphological features can help us understand the glacial paleo-environments so that we can predict the likely responses of present day glaciers and ice sheets to future changes in the climate. 12. Geochemistry of the Kola River and Lake Imandra, northwestern Russia
Sammanfattning : The impact from mining and large-scale agricultural activities on levels and migration of metals within the Kola River and Lake Imandra has been studied in detail. Evaluation of the pollution status in the Kola River is based on sampling of the dissolved (0. LÄS MER
13. Problems of stratigraphic correlation across the Arctic Ocean
Sammanfattning : Published articles on Arctic Ocean sedimentation rates generally falls into two categories; one suggesting mm/ka-scale sedimentation rates in the Amerasian Basin and the other cm/ka-scale rates in the Eurasian Basin. This is due to the interpretation of the first measured paleomagnetic polarity change in sediment cores as either the Brunhes-Matuyama (781 ka) reversal or as the short time magnetic excursion, Biwa II (220 ka) within the Brunhes Chron. 14. The role of sediments in the biogeochemical cycles of nutrients in the Gulf of Riga
Sammanfattning : The sediment biogeochemistry of C, N, P and biologic silica (BSi) plays an important role in cycling of these elements in aquatic ecosystems. In shallow coastal and estuarine systems, water-sediment nutrient dynamics can influence biological processes (e.g., primary production) in overlying waters. LÄS MER
15. Late Quaternary Biostratigraphy and Paleoceanography of the central Arctic Ocean
Sammanfattning : The central Arctic Ocean is one of the least explored deep sea regions and long biostratigraphic sediment records are sparse. The main focus of this thesis is the Arctic Ocean foraminiferal record and its application to reconstruct paleoceanographic variations and summer sea ice cover changes between late Quaternary interglacial periods.
