16. Quantitative genetics of Norway spruce in Sweden
Sammanfattning : Genetic improvement of solid wood and pulp and paper products related wood quality traits are important to increase productivity and value of Norway spruce plantation in Sweden. To incorporate wood quality traits into Norway spruce tree breeding program, genetic parameters of solid wood and fibre traits were investigated in a large Norway spruce population. LÄS MER
17. Phytoestrogens and fatty acids in forage and bovine milk
Sammanfattning : The overall aims of the studies underlying this thesis were to investigate effects of key factors on the concentrations and composition of phytoestrogens and fatty acids in forage species, and effects of differences in their concentrations and composition in forage on their concentrations in bovine milk. In each of the spring cuts, the total isoflavone concentrations in red clover were higher at Umeå than at Skara. LÄS MER
18. Mechanical properties of sound and of deteriorated softwood at different length scales : Poromicromechanical modeling and experimental investigations
Sammanfattning : Due to its natural origin and its inherent heterogeneities, mechanical properties of wood are highly anisotropic and show a broad variability, not only between different wood species, but also within a tree. Similar to other biological materials, the wood mi- crostructure is well organized and hierarchically structured from the annual rings visible to the naked eye down to the wood polymers cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin at the nanometer-scale. 20. The effect of simulated anthropogenic nitrogen deposition on the net carbon balance of boreal soils
Sammanfattning : Anthropogenic activities have globally increased nitrogen (N) deposition and carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas emissions. It is proposed that anthropogenic N deposition may increase the size of boreal forest CO₂ sink, because boreal ecosystems are N limited. LÄS MER
