  1. 1. Neuroprotection and axonal regeneration after peripheral nerve injury

    Författare :Dag Welin; Lev N. Novikov; Lars B. Dahlin; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Dorsal root ganglion; Motoneuron; Axonal reaction; Peripheral nerve injury; Nerve regeneration; N-acetylcysteine; Hand surgery; Handkirurgi; Anatomy; Anatomi; anatomi; Human Anatomy; handkirurgi; hand surgery;

    Sammanfattning : Following microsurgical reconstruction of injured peripheral nerves, severed axons are able to undergo spontaneous regeneration. However, the functional result is always unsatisfactory with poor sensory recovery and reduced motor function. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Development of biosynthetic conduits for peripheral nerve repair

    Författare :Aleksandra McGrath; Liudmila N Novikova; John Haycock; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biosynthetic conduit; Mesenchymal stem cells; Nerve graft; Nerve tissue engineering; Peripheral nerve injury; Schwann cells;

    Sammanfattning : Peripheral nerve injuries are often associated with significant loss of nervous tissue leading to poor restoration of function following repair of injured nerves. Although the injury gap could be bridged by autologous nerve graft, the limited access to donor material and additional morbidity such as loss of sensation and scarring have prompted a search for biosynthetic nerve transplants. 3. 3. Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells and injections of microRNA as therapeutics for nervous system repair

    Författare :Mallappa K. Kolar; Lev N. Novikov; Paul J. Kingham; Mikael Wiberg; Elisabet Åkesson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; spinal cord injury; peripheral nerve injury; mesenchymal stem cells; regeneration; neurotrophic factor; angiogenic factor;

    Sammanfattning : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord (SCI) and peripheral nerve (PNI) affect several thousand people worldwide every year. At present, there is no effective treatment for SCI and despite continuous improvements in microsurgical reconstructive techniques for PNI, many patients are still left with permanent, devastating neurological dysfunction. 4. 4. PACAP and orphanin FQ/nociceptin -Distribution, importance and regulation in sensory neurons and spinal cord

    Författare :Lina Pettersson; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; neuropsychology; Neurology; trk; spinal cord; sensory neuron; rat; PAC1; PACAP; ORL1; OFQ N; neurotrophin; neuropeptide; nerve transection; nerve compression; inflammatory pain; BDNF; DRG;

    Sammanfattning : Neuropeptide expression in the nervous system is abundant and plastic, and an altered expression after injury is an example of a functional response, helping the neuron to cope with adverse changes, and involves effects on differentiation, synthesis, repair/regeneration, survival, and modulation of signal transmission. I have investigated the distribution/expression of the neuropeptides, orphanin FQ/nociceptin (OFQ/N) and pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP), under normal conditions, in response to nerve injuries, and also studied sensory responses in mice deficient for the PAC1 receptor (PAC1-/-). 5. 5. Neuron-glial Interaction in the Developing Peripheral Nervous System

    Författare :Mikael Corell; Åsa Fex Svenningsen; Klas Kullander; Helgi Schöith; Heape Anthony; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Schwann cell; nonmyelinating Schwann cell; myelinating Schwann cell; development; proliferation; differentiation; myelin; neural stem cell; central nervous system; peripheral nervous system; enteric nervous system; N-cadherin; GABA; GAD; GABA B receptor; baclofen; CGP55485; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : The nervous system, including the brain, is the most sophisticated organ in the mammalian body. In such a complex network, neuron-glial interaction is essential and controls most developmental processes, such as stem cell fate determination, migration, differentiation, synapse formation, ensheathment and myelination.
