    Sammanfattning : This dissertation is about the goals that existed for Swedish essay writing in grammar schools from the start of the nineteenth century to the 1960s. The point of departure is the contrast between the negative image often painted of this essay writing and the positive picture painted of writing tuition before this period (classical rhetoric) and after it (process-oriented writing with the emphasis on genres outside the world of school).     Sammanfattning : The aim of this dissertation is to analytically discern different conversational genres within the teaching of literature, organized within the framework of the two school subjects in which Swedish is taught in upper secondary school, and to place this teaching of literature in a historical context by relating it to different conceptions of the Swedish subject.     Sammanfattning : Learning in school is in many respects done through language. However, it has been shown that the language of school assignments is seldom explicitly discussed in school.
