1. Scan Statistics for Space-Time Cluster Detection
Sammanfattning : Scan statistics are used by public health agencies to detect and localize disease outbreaks. This thesis provides an overview of scan statistics in the context of prospective disease surveillance and outbreak detection, presents a novel scan statistic to deal with the type of zero-abundant data that is often encountered in these settings, and—perhaps most importantly—implements this and other scan statistics in a freely available and open source R package. 2. Topics in multifractal measures, nonparametrics and biostatistics
Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of four papers. The first two papers, which comprise the main part of the thesis, deal with an unexpected connection between kernel density estimators and dimension spectra for multifractal measures. LÄS MER
3. On Clustering of Random Points in the Plane and in Space
Sammanfattning : If n points are independently and uniformly distributed in a large rectangular parallelepiped, A in Rd, d =2,3, they may possibly aggregate in such a way that they are contained in some translate of a given convex set C in A. If the points are replaced by copies of C, these translated sets may have a non-empty intersection. LÄS MER
4. Extreme Value Analysis of Huge Datasets: Tail Estimation Methods in High-Throughput Screening and Bioinformatics
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents results in Extreme Value Theory with applications to High-Throughput Screening and Bioinformatics. The methods described here, however, are applicable to statistical analysis of huge datasets in general. The main results are covered in four papers. LÄS MER
5. Large and rare : An extreme values approach to estimating the distribution of large defects in high-performance steels
Sammanfattning : The presence of different types of defects is an important reality for manufacturers and users of engineering materials. Generally, the defects are either considered to be the unwanted products of impurities in the raw materials or to have been introduced during the manufacturing process. LÄS MER
