1. MUSCLE TONE IMBALANCE IN HUMAN UPPER EXTREMITY An experimental study of muscle adaptation to altered tension
Sammanfattning : Aim: The aim of this thesis was to improve outcome after tendon transfer and rotator cuff surgery by investigating the impact on response to passive mechanical testing and change in structural characteristics associated with longstanding changes in the tension of skeletal muscle in the human upper extremities in vivo. Patients and methods: The investigational method was in vitro assessment of human upper extremity muscles. LÄS MER
2. Tendon transfer mechanics and donor muscle properties : implications in surgical correction of upper limb muscle imbalance
Sammanfattning : Tendon transfer surgery is used to improve the hand function of patients with nerve injuries, spinal cord lesions, cerebral palsy (CP), stroke, or muscle injuries. The tendon of a muscle, usually with function opposite that of the lost muscle function, is transferred to the tendon of the deficient muscle. LÄS MER
3. Structure and function of the cytoskeleton in cardiac and skeletal muscle
Sammanfattning : We have examined the functional and structural roles of the cytoskeletal protein desmin in cardiac and skeletal muscles using a genetically modified mouse (Des-/-) with the desmin gene ablated. Desmin forms filaments at the Z-disks in the striated muscle sarcomere, have connections to the sarcolemma and most likely align sarcomeres and whole cells. LÄS MER
4. On the rotational deformity of the shoulder following an obstetric brachial plexus palsy
Sammanfattning : An internal rotation deformity of the shoulder occurs very frequently in brachial plexus birth palsy. Even though surprisingly accurate descriptions of the deformity were already published at the beginning of the 1900s, the nature of the deformity is not well understood and there is no consensus regarding surgical treatment. 5. Cell motility : on the biochemical properties of profilin and the profilactin complex
Sammanfattning : Actin is a 42 000 Mw globular protein which is known to play an essential role in muscle contraction and which is suggested to have an equally important function in non-muscle cell motility. In isotonic solutions actin polymerizes to form double-stranded helixes with lengths of several microns. LÄS MER
