  1. 11. Laboratory diagnosis of Bordetella infection : DNA hybridization and PCR validated against serology and culture in a phase 3 vaccine efficacy trial

    Författare :Elisabet Reizenstein; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The present study has focused on developing and validating assays alternative to culture for detection of Bordetella pertussis. The sensitivity of culture is comparatively low when compared to serology, varying from 30% to 80%. An attempt to increase this sensitivity was made by development of assays detecting the DNA of the bacteria. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Lactobacillus iners and the normal vaginal flora

    Författare :Tell Jakobsson; Urban Forsum; Lars Fåhraeus; Per-Göran Larsson; Ingegerd Adlerberth; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Vagina; microbes; lactobacilli; phenotypic methods; molecular biology; 16S rRNA; pyrosequencing; Clinical bacteriology; Klinisk bakteriologi;

    Sammanfattning : The ecological niche of the vagina contains a large number of different microbes that are constantly interacting with each other and the host. Culture methods have not been sufficient in order to resolve the complexity of the normal vaginal flora. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Exploring B cell responses in Plasmodium falciparum malaria

    Författare :Caroline Rönnberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Plasmodium falciparum malaria remains one of the most devastating infectious diseases today. Small children in sub-Saharan Africa carry the heaviest burden of morbidity and mortality. Immunity to malaria is not well understood, although humoral immunity has proven an integral part of protection from disease. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Divergence, admixture and continuity in the human past : Demographic inference using ancient and modern genomes

    Författare :James McKenna; Mattias Jakobsson; Per Sjödin; Ida Moltke; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Human evolution; population genetics; ancient genomes; population continuity; divergence; Biology with Specialisation in Human Evolution and Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot människans evolution och genetik;

    Sammanfattning : Demographic forces shaping the genetic variation we observe today can include population divergences, admixture events and continuity through time. The advancement of high-throughput sequencing technologies, together with developments in molecular and bio-informatics methods, mean the number of ancient genomes available for inference has risen steeply. 5. 15. Sexual risk taking and HIV vulnerability among young women in post-apartheid South Africa

    Författare :Yanga Zembe; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Young women face the highest risk of HIV infection than any other group in South Africa. Within the broad population of young women, those who have multiple sexual partners are thought to have a heightened risk of contracting HIV. LÄS MER
