  1. 1. Lactic acid bacterial symbionts from the honeybee: Characteristics and applications in wound management

    Författare :Éile Butler; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; wound management; honey; extracellular proteins; bioactive substances; honeybee; Lactic acid bacteria;

    Sammanfattning : Antibiotic resistance is now a large threat with worldwide agreement that we will fall into a post-antibiotic era unless there is suitable treatment alternatives discovered. In recent years, chronic wounds have become a major burden on society and treatment is complicated. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Understanding Weather effects on, in, and from large Herbivore Population Dynamics

    Författare :Lena Månsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; monitoring; management; data collection; Ecology; Ekologi; indirect effects; vegetation; modeling; time series analysis; precipitation; weather; population dynamics; Large herbivores;

    Sammanfattning : Large herbivores are monitored for various reasons in many areas around the world. Data from such monitoring can be of varying degree of detail and extent. Several studies have shown that we need extensive amounts of data with a high degree of detail to be able to understand anything from it. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The Membrane-Spanning Domain of Complex I Investigated with Fusion Protein Techniques

    Författare :Maria Trane; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NuoN; NuoM; NuoL; covalent bound heme; Bacillus subtilis; Escherichia coli; membrane protein; His-tag; Cytochrome c; NADH:quinone oxidureductase; fusion protein;

    Sammanfattning : NADH:quinone oxidoreductase, or complex I, is a large, complex and poorly understood bioenergetic enzyme in the respiratory chain of living organisms. The enzyme has a conserved core structure, comprising fourteen protein subunits: Seven subunits protrude from the membrane and contain a flavin prosthetic group and eight iron-sulfur clusters that guide electrons from the oxidation of NADH towards the quinone binding site(s). 4. 4. The effects of temperature on avian physiology, behavior and development

    Författare :Andreas Nord; Evolutionär ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; clutch size; Cyanistes caeruleus; ecological immunology; energy expenditure; fever; Ficedula hypoleuca; heterothermy; hypothermia; incubation; life history; metabolic rate; Parus major; RMR; Taeniopygia guttata; temperature; winter;

    Sammanfattning : Temperature is a property of profound matter in all aspects of animal life, affecting both individual energy budgets and the environments in which animals reside. Thus, a proper understanding of the effects of temperature variation is instrumental in understanding not only animal form and function, but also the structure and dynamics of wild populations. 5. 5. Altered vascular responses in experimental congestive heart failure

    Författare :Anders Bergdahl; Lund Medicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cardiovascular system; Kardiovaskulära systemet;

    Sammanfattning : Congestive heart failure is accompanied with increased circulatory levels of several vasoregulatory neurotransmitters and hormones which affect the outcome of this disease. In this thesis the blood levels of several vasoactive peptides in humans with congestive heart failure and their effects on the vasculature by the use of an animal model of heart failure were studied.
