  1. 16. Head and Neck Cancer : Factors Affecting Tumour Growth

    Författare :Kaarina Sundelin; Elisabeth Paulette-Hultcrantz; Karin Öllinger; Karin Roberg; Hans Gustafsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Head and neck cancer; Chemoradiotherapy; Tumour; Malignant salivary; Metallothionein; Neo-angiogenesis; Metastases; Cytokine tumour necrosis factor-alpha; hepatocyte growth factor; Oncology; Onkologi;

    Sammanfattning : Head and neck cancer is the fifth most common cancer worldwide with an estimated annual global incidence of over 500 000 cases. These malignant tumours develop in the mucosal linings of the upper respiratory tract or in the salivary glands. The most common sites are in the oral cavity and larynx. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Modulation of serous salivary gland function by the sympathetic nervous system : a biochemical and ultrastructural study with special reference to β-adrenoceptor subtypes

    Författare :Roger Henriksson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Rat parotid gland; guinea-pig submandibular gland; ß-adrenoceptor subtypes; sympathetic denervation; sympathetic superstimulation; amylase secretion; cyclic AMP; ultrastructural stereology;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of the present investigation was to study the influence of the sympathetic nervous system and of various adrenoceptor agents on enzyme secretion and morphology in rat parotid and guinea-pig submandibular glands. Biochemical methods were combined with electron microscopical techniques. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Studies on the prevalence of reduced salivary flow rate in relation to general health and dental caries, and effect of iron supplementation

    Författare :Håkan Flink; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; Unstimulated whole saliva; stimulated whole saliva; resting saliva; xerostomia; dry mouth; hyposalivation; caries; remaining teeth; body mass index; iron deficiency; serum ferritin; circadian rhythm;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Reduced salivary flow is a condition that affects oral health. Its prevalence is unknown in young and middle-aged adults and there is no known treatment that permanently increases the salivary flow rate. Reduced salivary flow is related to dental caries, the most common oral disease. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Studies on the influence of sensory stimulation (acupuncture) on neuropeptide release in the saliva

    Författare :Irena Dawidson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; acupuncture; substance P; neurokinin A; calcitonin gene-related peptide; vasoactive intestinal polypeptide; neuropeptide Y; xerostomia; salivary secretion rates;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to elucidate the mechanisms behind the effect of sensory stimulation (acupuncture) on the salivary flow rates of xerostomic patients. We hypothesised that the sensory stimulation activates the sensory and autonomic nervous systems, leading to an increased release of neuropeptides that influence salivary secretion in co-operation with or/and beside the classical neurotransmitters. 5. 20. Lymphoma studies in patients with Sjögren's syndrome

    Författare :Lilian Vasaitis; Eva Baecklund; Lars Rönnblom; Thomas Mandl; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sjögren s syndrome; primary Sjögren s syndrome; lymphoma; IgG4-related disease; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Sammanfattning : Patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS) are at increased risk of developing malignant lymphoma. The studies in this thesis aim at broadening our understanding of the association between these two conditions. LÄS MER
