6. The zoo-geomorphological impact of fossorial rodents in sub-polar alpine environments
Sammanfattning : The geomorphological impact of small fossorial mammals (adapted to digging and living underground), such as rodents can be significant, and both their direct and indirect effects may contribute to landscape formation. This thesis is based on empirical field studies of two burrowing rodent species in sub-polar environments, namely invasive House mice (Mus musculus) on sub-Antarctic Marion Island and Norwegian lemmings (Lemmus lemmus) in sub-Arctic Abisko. 7. Cytokine regulation in rodents with experimental arthritis
Sammanfattning : The general aim of this project has been to try to elucidate the mechanisms behind induction of arthritis by using in situ hybridization and immunohistochemical methods to analyse the dynamics of the cytokine network in vivo, in the peripheral Iymphoid system and in the joints of rodents with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA)and oil-induced arthritis (OIA). We first examined the kinetics of cytokine gene expression in vivo, in the draining Iymph nodes of DA rats following immunization with rat type II collagen (RCII) emulsified in Freund's incomplete adjuvant oil (FIA) or with only FIA, which are regimens that induce CIA and OIA, respectively. 8. The genetics of experimental arthritis in rodents
Sammanfattning : Unravelling the genetic susceptibility to complex autoimmune diseases and understanding these pathologies on a mechanistic level are major obstacles to improve our possibilities for therapeutic intervention and an increase in the quality of life of affected patients. Studies in experimental rodent models, that can be run under stable environmental conditions, which itself can be subjected to experimental manipulation, and in cohorts of potentially unlimited size, hold significant promise for the understanding of genes and pathways involved in complex autoimmune diseases. 10. Modelling parkinsonian akinesia and dyskinesia in dopamine depleted rodents
Sammanfattning : Animal models of Parkinson’s disease and L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia are essential to explore pathophysiological hypotheses and to test new treatment options. There are many different animal models of Parkinson's disease, which differ greatly with respect to species, mechanisms of nigral cell death, and extent of dopamine-dependent motor deficits. LÄS MER
