11. Expression of sulfatide in rodent CNS - not only restricted to myelin
Sammanfattning : Sulfatide is an acidic glycosphingolipid and a component of myelin in the nervous system proposed to be involved in maintenance of the myelin structure and thereby its function. Sulfatide is also a commonly used marker for detection of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells in cultures as well as in tissues. LÄS MER
12. Functions of estrogen receptor b in the metabolism of rodent bone
Sammanfattning : Estrogens are important for widespread biological functions including regulation of development and maintenance of skeletal tissue. The effects of estrogens are thought to be mediated via two intracellular proteins, estrogen receptors a and beta (ERalpha and ERbeta , respectively), which are expressed in most cell types in bone. 13. Molecular Adaptations in the Endogenous Opioid System in Human and Rodent Brain
Sammanfattning : The aims of the thesis were to examine i) whether the endogenous opioid system (EOS) is lateralized in human brain areas involved in processing of emotions and pain; ii) whether EOS responses to unilateral brain injury depend on side of lesion, and iii) whether in human alcoholics, this system is involved in molecular adaptations in brain areas relevant for cognitive control of addictive behavior and habit formation. The main findings were that (1) opioid peptides but not opioid receptors and classic neurotransmitters are markedly lateralized in the anterior cingulate cortex involved in processing of positive and negative emotions and affective component of pain. 14. Gene expresion in rodent spinal neuronal populations and their response to injury
Sammanfattning : Motor neurons are the centre of convergence for all neural activity relating to movements. The activity integrated in the motor neurons is transmitted to appropriate muscles generating coordinated muscle contractions. LÄS MER
15. New sensitive and specific methods for sex steroid measurements in rodent serum and tissues
Sammanfattning : Accurate measurement of sex steroids (androgens, estrogens, and progesterone) is essential in research and clinical settings for common diseases including osteoporosis, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. Sex steroids are not only produced in the gonads and adrenals but may also be locally synthesized in peripheral target tissues. LÄS MER
