1. Why do rodent populations fluctuate? : stability and bifurcation analysis of some discrete and continuous predator-prey models
Sammanfattning : A review of the microtine rodent cycle problem is given as well as a review of mathematical results related to the microtine rodent cycle problem. Biologically, 1 treat dynamical consequences of generalist predation and optimal breeding behavior. LÄS MER
2. The spatial and temporal dynamics of plant-animal interactions in the forest herb Actaea spicata
Sammanfattning : Landscape effects on species performance currently receives much attention. Habitat loss and fragmentation are considered major threats to species diversity. Deciduous forests in southern Sweden are previous wooded pastures that have become species-rich communities appearing as islands in agricultural landscapes, varying in species composition. LÄS MER
3. Neocortical interpretation of haptic and visual events across brain states: Electrophysiological investigations in sensory information processing
Sammanfattning : This thesis delves into the complex architecture of dynamic sensory information processing in the neocortex. Specifically, it asks how primary sensory cortical regions are influenced by local and widespread cortical state changes. LÄS MER
4. Neutral proteases of rodent mast cells
Sammanfattning : Mast cells are important effector cells in general as well as in allergic inflammation andin the defence against helminthic parasites and bacteria. Two major populations, withdifferences in tissue distribution, have been identified; connective tissue mast cells andmucosal mast cells. LÄS MER
5. Predator responses to non-stationary rodent cycles
Sammanfattning : Regular fluctuations in population size, cycles, are common in small mammals and have important effects on predator populations and life histories. In this thesis, I identify long-term patterns and processes in two specialist predators, the arctic fox Vulpes lagopus and the rough-legged buzzard Buteo lagopus, in relation to their prey (lemmings and voles) and in the case of the arctic fox also to a dominant competitor, the red fox Vulpes vulpes.
