  1. 1. Arctic Atmospheric Rivers : Eulerian and Lagrangian features, and trends over the last 40 years

    Författare :Cheng You; Michael Tjernström; Abhay Devasthale; Heikki Järvinen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic; Atmospheric river; Stratocumulus; Blocking; Turbulence; Longwave irradiance; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Sammanfattning : Arctic Atmospheric rivers, termed ‘warm-and-moist intrusion’ (WaMAI) in this thesis, transporting heat and moisture into the Arctic from lower latitudes, is a key contributor to the amplified warming in the Arctic under global change (Arctic Amplification). However, the warming effect of WaMAIs and its transformation along the trajectories into high Arctic still remain unclear, as well as their relation with the large-scale atmospheric circulation. 2. 2. How to estimate environmental persistence : Understanding persistence of organic micropollutants in rivers from a multidisciplinary perspective

    Författare :Claudia Coll Mora; Anna Sobek; Matthew MacLeod; Emma J. Rosi; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; organic micropollutants; biodegradation; persistence; rivers; flume mesocosms; Junge relationships; OECD 308 bottle incubations; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Organic micropollutants such as food additives, pharmaceuticals and personal care products are found in rivers worldwide. Persistence is a key criteria in chemical risk assessment as micropollutants that are persistent pose an exposure hazard to humans and the environment. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Atlantic salmon in regulated rivers : Migration, dam passage, and fish behavior

    Författare :Daniel Nyqvist; Larry Greenberg; Theodore Castro-Santos; Olle Calles; Scott Hinch; Karlstads universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fish migration; fish passage; downstream migration; kelt; smolt; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Hydropower dams block migration routes and disrupt longitudinal connectivity in rivers, thereby posing a threat to migratory fish species. Various fish passage solutions have been implemented to improve connectivity with varying success. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Encountering Environments. Natural conditions for subsistence and trade at Monte Polizzo, Sicily, 650-550 BC

    Författare :Cecilia Sandström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Ancient Sicily; Western Sicily; Monte Polizzo; Elymian; Indigenous; Iron Age; Archaic; Ancient environment; Archaeology; Geoarchaeology; Landscape Archaeology; Ecology; Geomorphology; Rivers; Ancient navigability; Subsistence; Land use; Trade; Trade routes; Transport amphorae; Connectivity; Household economy; Palynology; Exchange; Selinus; Motya; Segesta;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis is to deepen our knowledge about indigenous western Sicilians commonly called the Elymians and, ultimately, to recognise them as independent actors in Sicilian history. A vital part of this endeavour is to assess the Elymian role in regional trade and to evaluate the subsistence challenges they faced. LÄS MER

  5. 5. "Flottningen dör aldrig" : bäckflottningens avveckling efter Ume- och Vindelälven 1945-70

    Författare :Erik Törnlund; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; forestry work; timber floating; transport history; log driving; forest history; floatways; rivers; tributaries; Nothern Sweden; Economic history; Ekonomisk historia;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis has been to study and analyse in detail the process by which timber floating in tributaries was phased out. The region covered is that of the Ume and Vindel rivers and the period studied is 1945-70. The years I945-60 have been the most central to the analysis. LÄS MER
