  1. 1. Risk and prognostic factors for malignant glioma

    Författare :Sara Sjöström; Beatrice S Melin; Ulrika Andersson; Monika Hegi; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Glioma; Glioblastoma; Risk; Outcome; EGR; EGFR; VEGF; VEGFR; DNA repair; virus; Oncology; Onkologi; onkologi; Oncology;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Glioblastoma is the most common and aggressive type of glioma and associated with poor prognosis. Apart from ionizing radiation and some rare genetic disorders, few aetiological factors have been identified for primary brain tumours. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Identifying Risk Genes for Cervical Cancer : Using Affected Sib-Pairs and Case-Control Materials from Sweden

    Författare :Malin Engelmark; Ulf Gyllensten; Dan Holmberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medicine; Cervical cancer; HPV; Affected sib-pairs; HLA; Fas; Genomewide scan; 9q32; TSCOT; Medicin;

    Sammanfattning : Cervical cancer is a multifactorial disease. Infection by oncogenic types of the human papillomavirus (HPV) is the major environmental risk factor and host genetic susceptibility also influences disease development. The aim of this thesis is to identify and analyse risk genes involved in the genetic predisposition to cervical carcinoma. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Genetic Risk Factors for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus : From Candidate Genes to Functional Variants

    Författare :Anna-Karin Abelson; Marta Alarcón-Riquelme; Holger Luthman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Systemic Lupus Erythematosus; SLE; association study; complex disease; genetic; Medical genetics; Medicinsk genetik;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis has been to identify genetic variants that increase the susceptibility for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease caused by a complex interplay between various genetic and environmental factors. Five different candidate genes were selected through different strategies, and were analysed for association with SLE in an attempt to distinguish some of the underlying mechanisms of this disease. 4. 4. Factors influencing the risk of diabetic nephropathy : analyses of genes, smoking and diet

    Författare :Anna Möllsten; Gisela Dahlquist; Lise Tarnow; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; type 1 diabetes; diabetic nephropathy; oxidative stress; smoking; diet; blood pressure; renin-angiotensin system; nitric oxide synthase; Kidney diseases; Njursjukdomar;

    Sammanfattning : Diabetic long-term complications, despite intensive treatment, cause serious handicaps at relatively young age in diabetic patients. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) develops in up to 30% of patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). LÄS MER

  5. 5. Long QT syndrome in Sweden : founder effects and associated cardiac phenotypes

    Författare :Annika Winbo; Annika Rydberg; Eric Schulze-Bahr; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Long QT Syndrome; Jervell and Lange-Nielsen Syndrome; inherited arrhythmia; founder effects; clinical genetics; haplotype analysis; mutation age; founder mutation; clinical phenotype; life-threatening cardiac events; mutation-specific; KCNQ1 gene; modifier genes; sequence variants; risk stratification; risk factor; gender; pediatrik; Pediatrics;

    Sammanfattning : Background: We aimed to increase the knowledge regarding the familial arrhythmogenic disorder Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) and its recessive variant Jervell and Lange-Nielsen Syndrome (JLNS) in Sweden, including prevalences and clinical phenotypes. A specific focus was directed towards two KCNQ1 mutations –p.Y111C and p. LÄS MER
