  1. 1. Effects of retinoic acid in the mouse olfactory sensory systems

    Författare :Maria Hörnberg; Staffan Bohm; Finn Hallböök; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; olfactory; retinoic acid; neuron survival; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : A common characteristic in neurodegenerative diseases of the brain is death of specific neuronal populations. The lack of neuron proliferation and axon extension in most parts of the central nervous system leads to chronic loss of neurons in the case of injury or disease. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Thymic Stroma and T Cell Development. Impacts of Retinoic Acid Signaling

    Författare :Kerstin Wendland; Slemhinnans immunologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Thymus; Thymic epithelial cells; Retinoic acid; T cell development; Stromal Cells;

    Sammanfattning : The development of functionally competent, self-tolerant T cells in the thymus is an essential prerequisite for the formation of adaptive immune responses against foreign pathogens. Thymic epithelial cells (TECs) form specialized stromal microenvironments in the cortex (cTEC) and medulla (mTEC) of the thymus that support all stages of T cell development, from the entry of thymocyte progenitors to the exit of mature naive T cells. 3. 3. CYP26B1 as regulator of retinoic acid in vascular cells and atherosclerotic lesions

    Författare :Ali Ateia Elmabsout; Allan Sirsjö; Karin Fransén; Helen Håkansson; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CYP26B1; alternative splice; vascular cells; atherosclerosis; alltrans-retinoic acid; gene polymorphism; inflammation; statins; Medicine; Medicin;

    Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular disease (CVD), currently the most common cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, is caused mainly by atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a chronic multifocal, immunoinflammatory, fibroproliferative disease of medium and large arteries. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Retinoic Acid Metabolism Blocking Agents and the Skin : In vivo and in vitro Studies of the Effects on Normal and Diseased Human Epidermis

    Författare :Elizabeth Pavez Loriè; Anders Vahlquist; Hans Törmä; Marie Virtanen; Helen Håkansson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CYP; CYP26; retinoids; vitamin A; RAMBA; metabolism; keratinocyte; epidermis; retinoid regulated genes; Dermatology and venerology; Dermatologi och venerologi;

    Sammanfattning : Retinoic Acid Metabolism Blocking Agents (RAMBAs) increase the endogenous levels of all-trans retinoic acid (RA) by inhibiting CYP26 enzymes. Thus they are believed to mimic the effects of retinoid treatment. Their mechanism of action and effects on vitamin A metabolism in keratinocytes are however uncertain. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Activity-regulated retinoic acid signaling in olfactory sensory neurons

    Författare :Hande Login; Staffan Bohm; Mattias Alenius; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mouse olfactory system; RA; neuronal activity; CNG; Cyp26B1; BACE1; Kirrel-2; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of the studies included in the thesis is to better understand the interplay between neuronal activity-dependent gene regulation and the bioactive vitamin A metabolite all-trans-retinoic acid (RA) during postnatal development, refinement and maintenance of precise neuronal connectivity using the olfactory sensory neuron (OSN) in the olfactory epithelium (OE) of genetically modified mice as a model. We show that:Inhibition of RA receptor (RAR)-mediated transcription in OSNs reduces expression of the olfactory cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) ion channel, which is required for odorant receptor (OR)-mediated stimulus transduction.
