  1. 1. On the adsorption behaviour of saliva and purified salivary proteins at solid/liquid interfaces

    Författare :Liselott Lindh; Malmö högskola; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; acidic proline-rich proteins; adsorption; BSM; diffusion; ellipsometry; interfaces; mass transport limitation; mucins; MUC5B; saliva; salivary proteins; statherin; surface properties;

    Sammanfattning : Den salivfilm som bildas genom selektiv proteinadsorption på ytor i munhålan har stor profylaktisk betydelse genom sin skyddande funktion och befrämjar därigenom oral hälsa. Några av de adsorberade komponenterna har smörjande funktion (t ex muciner, sura prolinrika proteiner (PRP) och statherin), som är viktig bl a för att förhindra slitage mellan tandytor vid tuggning och hos gnisslare. 2. 2. Unstimulated human whole saliva flow rate in relation to hyposalivation and dental caries

    Författare :Håkan Flink; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Dental caries; iron deficiency; serum ferritin; unstimulated whole saliva; resting saliva; xerostomia; dry mouth; circadian rhythm.;

    Sammanfattning : Introduction: Salivary secretion is influenced by a large number of factors, including the circadian rhythm, making the detection of reduced salivary flow (hyposalivation) difficult. This is important since severely reduced salivary secretion has been associated with an increased risk for dental caries and may be a sign of a general disease, e.g. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Studies on the influence of sensory stimulation (acupuncture) on neuropeptide release in the saliva

    Författare :Irena Dawidson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :acupuncture; substance P; neurokinin A; calcitonin gene-related peptide; vasoactive intestinal polypeptide; neuropeptide Y; xerostomia; salivary secretion rates;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to elucidate the mechanisms behind the effect of sensory stimulation (acupuncture) on the salivary flow rates of xerostomic patients. We hypothesised that the sensory stimulation activates the sensory and autonomic nervous systems, leading to an increased release of neuropeptides that influence salivary secretion in co-operation with or/and beside the classical neurotransmitters. 4. 4. Studies on the prevalence of reduced salivary flow rate in relation to general health and dental caries, and effect of iron supplementation

    Författare :Håkan Flink; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Unstimulated whole saliva; stimulated whole saliva; resting saliva; xerostomia; dry mouth; hyposalivation; caries; remaining teeth; body mass index; iron deficiency; serum ferritin; circadian rhythm;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Reduced salivary flow is a condition that affects oral health. Its prevalence is unknown in young and middle-aged adults and there is no known treatment that permanently increases the salivary flow rate. Reduced salivary flow is related to dental caries, the most common oral disease. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Mitochondrial efficiency : focus on dietary nitrate, hypoxia and exercise

    Författare :Tomas Schiffer; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Metabolic efficiency affects weight control, generation of heat, exercise performance and health. The tiny radical nitric oxide (NO) targets several cellular components that can influence metabolic efficiency. NO is produced endogenously from L-arginine and molecular oxygen by specific NO-synthases. LÄS MER
