  1. 21. Drivers of carbon sink function in tropical seagrass beds : influence of carbon import, plant composition, seascape configuration and human activities

    Författare :Rashid O. Ismail; Mats Björk; Martin Gullström; Maria E. Asplund; Amelia S. Buriyo; Matern S.P. Mtolera; Teresa Alcoverro; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Carbon sequestration; tropical seagrass meadows; coastal seascape; landscape configuration and transformation; calcification; allochthonous carbon; community respiration; carbon sink; human disturbance; coastal conservation; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Seagrass meadows are effective carbon sinks, sequestering atmospheric CO2 and capturing allochthonous organic material, storing organic carbon (Corg) in their sediments, so called Blue Carbon. In tropical areas, seagrass meadows have a high number of calcareous organisms, which can offset carbon sequestration by releasing CO2 through their calcification. LÄS MER

  2. 22. Prokaryotic respiratory supercomplexes : Studies of interactions between complexes III and IV

    Författare :Olga Stah; Pia Ädelroth; Petra Hellwig; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bioenergetics; membrane protein; bacterial respiration; electron transport chain; supercomplex; cytochrome c oxidase; membrane-anchored cytochrome c; cytochrome bc1 complex; electron transfer; proton transfer; time-resolved spectroscopy; apoptosis; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Respiratory processes for cellular energy conversion are carried out by the membrane-associated enzymes of the electron transfer chain (ETC). In recent years there has been emerging data showing that the members of the ETC organize into higher-level assemblies called supercomplexes (SCs) whose functional relevance is not yet fully understood. 3. 23. On bioenergetic failure in septic shock : lactate kinetics and mitochondrial respiration

    Författare :Jonathan Grip; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Septic shock, a dysregulated immune response to an infection, is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in patients treated in intensive care units (ICUs). The cause of the organ dysfunction seen in sepsis is still not fully elucidated, but a disrupted intracellular metabolism, a bioenergetics failure, has been suggested as a possible mechanism. 4. 24. Variability of blood pressure and heart rate in borderline and mild hypertension : With special reference to spectral analysis

    Författare :Reijo Takalo; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medical sciences; hypertension; blood pressure; ambulatory monitoring; power spectrum analysis; pulsecontour method; systemic hemodynamics; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Clinical Physiology; klinisk fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to study whether blood pressure (BP) or heart rate (HR) variability in borderline (BHT) and hypertensive (HT) subjects differs from that in normotensive (NT) subjects, and whether indices for BP and HR variability can be used in risk stratification for future hypertension. The study groups consisted of 35 NT, 29 BHT, and 34 HT middle-aged men. LÄS MER

  5. 25. Characterization of respiratory physiology in Lactococcus lactis for high-yield production of high-performance starter cultures

    Författare :Anna Johanson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; batch cultivations; lag phase; haemin haem; respiration-permissive conditions; aerobic growth; Lactic acid bacteria; acidification activity; continuous cultivations; starter culture production;

    Sammanfattning : Fermented food products are consumed world-wide, every day, and the demand is growing as intake increases. Lactococcus lactis is a lactic acid bacterium commonly used as a starter culture to produce fermented dairy products. LÄS MER
