11. Ontogenetic scaling and the development of within-cohort size structure
Sammanfattning : It is increasingly recognized that individuals of the same species differ from each other and influence and respond to their environment in unique ways. This thesis deals with size variation among individuals that not only are of the same species but also of similar age. LÄS MER
12. Administrative Reforms and the Quest for Foreign Investment in China : The Case of Shenzhen
Sammanfattning : This study examines the attempts made by one local government in China, Shenzhen, to improve its investment environment for foreign-invested enterprises through administrative reforms between 1980 and 1997. Three empirical questions are posed: what reforms have been undertaken, what effects have they had and how have changes in the organizational environment affected them. LÄS MER
13. Benthic use of phytoplankton blooms: uptake, burial and biodiversity effects in a species-poor system
Sammanfattning : Animals living in marine sediments (the second largest habitat on earth) play a major role in global biogeochemical cycling. By feeding on organic matter from settled phytoplankton blooms they produce food for higher trophic levels and nutrients that can fuel primary production. LÄS MER
14. Effects of size-dependent predation and competition on population and community dynamics
Sammanfattning : Most animals grow substantially during their lifetime and change in competitive ability, predatory capacity and their susceptibility to predation as they grow. This thesis addresses the implications of this on regulation and dynamics within populations as well as between population interactions. LÄS MER
15. On the origin of polymorphism - consequences of competition and predation in heterogeneous environments
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I have studied when an initially monomorphic population can diverge into two morphs in a heterogeneous environment. Evolution is driven by competition for resources or predation. In Paper I, we studied source-sink dynamics during evolution in an environment with two types of resource of different abundance in two habitats. LÄS MER
