1. Renal Dysfunction and Cardiovascular Disease
Sammanfattning : Kidney dysfunction increases cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The mechanisms for the risk increase seem to involve a combination of traditional and non-traditional CVD risk factors. We studied renal dysfunction as CVD and mortality risk factor in middle-aged men free from diabetes and CVD. 2. Impact of renal dysfunction on serum Prostate-Specific Antigen
Sammanfattning : Measurement of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in blood is an important tool in detection for prostate cancer. PSA occurs in several molecular forms in blood: mainly as a free form with a molecular mass of 28 kDa; and as PSA complexed to alpha-1-antichymotrypsin, complexed PSA, with a molecular mass of 90 kDa. 3. Low-Density Lipoprotein Oxidation and Renal Dysfunction : New Markers of Poor Prognosis in Patients with Unstable Coronary Artery Disease
Sammanfattning : In patients with unstable coronary artery disease (CAD) biochemical markers are emerging as useful tools in clinical management. In this thesis we studied the use of markers of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation and renal function. LÄS MER
4. Renal dysfunction and protection in cardiovascular surgery
Sammanfattning : Purpose: This thesis is focused on studies of postoperative renal dysfunction (PRD), and on renal effects and possible prophylactic potentials of three vasoactive substances, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), and the calcium channel antagonist diltiazem. Methods: In paper I the medical records of 1 030 consecutive cardiothoracic surgery patients were evaluated and glomerular filtration calculated from serum creatinine levels. LÄS MER
5. Hyaluronan and Renal Fluid Handling : Studies during Normal and Pathological Conditions of Renal Function
Sammanfattning : The kidney is the major organ responsible for the regulation of the composition and volume of the body fluids, which is essential for homeostasis. The glycosaminoglycan hyaluronan (HA), with extreme water-binding capacity, is present in the interstitium of the kidney with a heterogenous distribution. LÄS MER
