16. Fragmented landscapes : Assessment and communication of landscape connectivity in human-dominated landscapes
Sammanfattning : This licentiate thesis summarizes the first half of my PhD on the theme of management of fragmented landscapes. The thesis applies – and reflects on the use of – network analysis of connectivity in relation to landscape planning. LÄS MER
17. Seeing the invisible: Evolution of wing interference patterns in Hymenoptera, and their application in taxonomy
Sammanfattning : The remarkably thin transparent wing membranes in tiny wasps may appear to have a simple structural design, but hide a largely unexplored complex of micro-morphological features that serve aerodynamics and may also function in visual signaling. I found that when such small transparent wings are viewed against a dark background they display vivid structural color patterns due to thin film interference, and named them Wing Interference Patterns (WIPs). 18. Signal Processing Techniques for Detection of Buried Landmines using Ground Penetrating Radar
Sammanfattning : The present thesis deals with the problem of detecting and classifying buried objects. The application in mind when addressing this problem is the detection of buried landmines. According to the International Committee of the Red Cross, about 100 million landmines are buried in 62 countries around the world. LÄS MER
19. Fluorescent thiophene-based ligands for detection and characterization of disease-associated protein aggregates
Sammanfattning : In this thesis the unique optical properties of fluorescent ligands termed luminescent conjugated oligothiophenes (LCOs) have been used to study a variety of protein aggregates associated with human protein misfolding disease. This heterogeneous group of diseases contains well known and fatal members such as Alzheimer´s and Huntington´s disease and the development of sensitive tools for the detection and characterization of protein aggregates is crucial for unravelling the complexity of these pathologies. 20. Optical Imaging and Spectroscopy of Metal Nanostructures
Sammanfattning : Noble metal structures with size in the sub 100 nm range exhibit extraordinary optical properties due to collective oscillations of conduction electrons, the surface plasmon resonances (SPR). The most remarkable feature of these structures is the ability to redistribute electromagnetic radiation and concentrate strong fields near the surface. LÄS MER
