16. On the role of innate cell interactions in inflammation and leukemia
Sammanfattning : Inflammatory cells of the innate immune system launch rapid and powerful effector responses in the combat against infectious pathogens. However, these inflammatory mediators may cause excessive damage to the host and, therefore, require rigid control systems to maintain the delicate balance between prompt clearance of infections and the risk of developing immunopathology. 17. Interactions between the brain and the immune system in pain and inflammation
Sammanfattning : Reciprocal interactions between the nervous and immune systems have gained a lot of attention in the last two decades, especially after demonstrating that cytokine immunotherapies can induce depression and after describing the inflammatory reflex. A lot of effort has been dedicated to understanding how the signals from the immune system reach the brain and vice versa, and on their role in health and disease. LÄS MER
18. Summer cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea - implications for copepod recruitment
Sammanfattning : During summer, the Baltic Sea is subjected to the world’s largest cyanobacterial blooms. These blooms are linked to eutrophication and raise many questions concerning their effects on the ecosystem. To understand their impacts on the food web dynamics, it is essential to assess growth responses of grazers to these cyanobacteria. LÄS MER
19. Ecological and Evolutionary Consequences of Herbivory in the Perennial Herb Lythrum salicaria
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I combined field, common-garden and greenhouse experiments to examine the ecological and evolutionary consequences of plant-herbivore interactions in the perennial herb Lythrum salicaria. More specifically I examined (1) whether resistance and tolerance to damage from herbivores vary with latitude and are positively related to the intensity of herbivory in natural populations, (2) whether effects of herbivory on plant fitness vary with latitude, (3) whether populations are locally adapted and whether herbivory influences the relative fitness of populations, and (4) whether the intensity and effects of insect herbivory on reproductive output vary locally along a disturbance gradient and are associated with differences in plant resistance. 20. There’s no time to rush! : pigs’ and transport drivers’ welfare and interactions during slaughter transport
Sammanfattning : Loading at slaughter transport is one of the most stressful situations for pigs. Animal transport drivers require a broad set of skills and knowledge on e.g. pig handling. LÄS MER
