  1. 1. Engineered Wetlands and Reactive Bed Filters for Treatment of Landfill Leachate

    Författare :Agnieszka Kietliñska; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :Blast furnace slag; Compact constructed wetland; Metals; Nitrogen; Polonite; Sorbents;

    Sammanfattning : The main objectives of this study were to investigate (i) anovel wetland treatment technology and (ii) selected bed filtermedia for the removal of contaminants from landfill leachate. Areview of the literature concerning experiences of the use ofconstructed wetlands (CW) for the removal of nitrogen fromlandfill leachate, showed that at least three groups oftreatment systems are in practice: sub-surface flow wetlands,hybrid systems (a combination of vertical and horizontal flowwetlands) and, compact constructed wetland (CCW). 2. 2. Bacterial Adaptive Responses - Coping with Oxygen Limitation, Reactive Nitrogen Species and Disulfide Stress

    Författare :Annika Rogstam; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bacillus subtilis; redox regulation; nitrosative stress; disulfide stress;

    Sammanfattning : Bacteria have a remarkable ability to adapt to different environments. When bacteria encounter stress that causes macromolecular damage in the cell, leading to a suboptimal performance of cell metabolism, they can elicit an adaptive response. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Redox Regulation and Stress Responses - Studies in Bacillus subtilis

    Författare :Jonas Larsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; redox sensor; oxygen sensor; reactive nitrogen species; RNS; Biology; Biologi; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; bakteriologi; Mikrobiologi; virologi; mykologi; Bacillus subtilis; Rex; yjbI; ydiH; yjbH; redox regulation;

    Sammanfattning : Redox reactions are central to all organisms to sustain life. Both anabolic and catabolic metabolism depends on them. It is thus vital to sense and adjust the redox balance in the cell. One major factor affecting the redox status is the level of oxygen present. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Reactive oxygen and nitrogen in host defence against Francisella tularensis

    Författare :Helena Lindgren; Anders Sjöstedt; Tommy Sundquist; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell and molecular biology; Francisella tularensis; inducible nitric oxide synthase; phagocyte oxidase; macrophages; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; klinisk bakteriologi; Clinical Bacteriology;

    Sammanfattning : Francisella tularensis, the causative agent of tularemia, is a potent human and animal pathogen. Initially upon infection of the host, intramacrophage proliferation of F. tularensis occurs but after activation of the acquired host immunity, the phagocytes become activated to kill the bacterium. In my thesis, I focused on mechanisms utilized by F. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Control of reactive oxygen species homeostasis in response to environmental stress

    Författare :Malgorzata Plaszczyca; Katharina Pawlowski; Jean-Jacques Drevon; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Stress; antioxidant defense; ascorbate peroxidase; aerenchyma; actinorhiza; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Plants are exposed to various fluctuations in their environmental conditions - light intensity, temperature, water status - and have to adapt in order to survive. Plant acclimatory responses can include the formation of new tissues, e.g., aerenchyma, or the activation of defense systems, e. LÄS MER
