21. New neurons and astrocytes in the adult brain. Studies on adult rat neural progenitors in vivo and in vitro with special reference to the effects of IGF-I and CNTF regarding proliferation and lineage determination
Sammanfattning : The hippocampal dentate gyrus in several species, including man, continues to produce new neurons and glial cells in adulthood. The generation of new neurons and glial cells in the adult hippocampus is under strict regulation. Two major events of significance for cell genesis from progenitor cells are proliferation and lineage determination. LÄS MER
22. Recovery from focal brain ischemia induced by extradural compression in diabetic and non-diabetic rats
Sammanfattning : Cerebrovascular disease and head trauma are among the leading causes of death and disability. In addition to severe motor disturbances, ischemia resulting from stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI) can cause mild to severe cognitive deficits. LÄS MER
23. Astrocytic communication and cell death during metabolic depression and oxidative stress
Sammanfattning : Stroke is a major cause of death and adult disability in the western world. Most often, stroke is caused by the occlusion of a brain artery. Within the perfusion territory of the occluded vessel, various degrees of necrotic and delayed programmed cell death will occur if the occlusion persists, leading to expanding tissue damage. LÄS MER
24. Immune regulation within the central nervous system and its role in demyelinating diseases
Sammanfattning : Multiple sclerosis (MS) and its animal model, experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE), are diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) characterized by perivascular mononuclear inflammation and oligodendrocyte loss with demyelination. However, it is still not clear whether the pathology in MS and EAE is due to neuroantigen-specific CD4+ T cell-mediated autoimmune responses and/or bystander myelin damage resulting from an inflammatory response. 25. Glial cell responses, complement and clusterin expression after lesions in central or peripheral nervous system
Sammanfattning : The present Thesis examines the expression and role of complement and the complement regulator clusterin after central or peripheral axon injury in relation to the responses of non-neuronal cells. Following peripheral sensory nerve injury, complement was expressed in the spinal cord and brain stem in association with reactive microglia, which also appeared to be a local source of complement.
