  1. 1. Blinded by the light : developing models of settlement and mobility with the use of spectroscopy and exploratory methods

    Författare :Mattias Sjölander; Philip I. Buckland; Johan Linderholm; Peter Jordan; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; archaeology; hunter-gatherer; spectroscopy; chemometrics; quartz; quartzite; bifacial; lithics; geoarchaeology; exploratory; spatial analysis; modelling; arkeologi; jakt- och fångstfolk; spektroskopi; kemometri; kvarts; kvartsit; bifacial; flathuggen; geoarkeologi; rumslig analys; modellering; Archaeology; arkeologi; environmental archaeology; miljöarkeologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis an exploratory approach has been used to study settlement and mobility among hunter-gatherer societies in Northern Sweden during the 2 000 – 0 BC period. The focus has been on developing the topics of bifacial point use and raw material management of quartzand quartzite materials. LÄS MER

  2. 2. On Death in the Mesolithic : Or the Mortuary Practices of the Last Hunter-Gatherers of the South-Western Iberian Peninsula, 7th–6th Millennium BCE

    Författare :Rita Peyroteo Stjerna; Kjel Knutsson; Mariana Diniz; Liv Nilsson Stutz; Clive Bonsall; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; death; Late Mesolithic; hunter-gatherers; social memory; place; burial practices; mortuary ritual; historical process; south-western Iberian Peninsula; archaeothanatology; radiocarbon dating and Bayesian analysis; stable isotopes carbon and nitrogen ; shell middens; museum collections; Archaeology; Arkeologi;

    Sammanfattning : The history of death is entangled with the history of changing social values, meaning that a shift in attitudes to death will be consistent with changes in a society’s world view.Late Mesolithic shell middens in the Tagus and Sado valleys, Portugal, constitute some of the largest and earliest burial grounds known, arranged and maintained by people with a hunting, fishing, and foraging lifestyle, c 6000–5000 cal BCE. 3. 3. Palaeogenomic reconstruction of woolly mammoth evolutionary history and extinction dynamics

    Författare :Marianne Dehasque; Love Dalén; David Díez-del-Molino; Rike Stelkens; Rebecca N. Johnson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; woolly mammoth; Mammuthus primigenius; extinction; Wrangel Island; ancient DNA; palaeogenomics; radiocarbon dating; structural variants; genome erosion; population structure; Systematic Zoology; zoologisk systematik och evolutionsforskning;

    Sammanfattning : Biodiversity is declining globally. Yet, the biological and genetic processes associated with these declines on a longer timescale are still poorly understood. Ancient DNA is a powerful tool to study evolution in real-time. Despite advances in the field, there is further need for refinement of laboratory and computational techniques. LÄS MER
