6. Optimizing experimental radioimmunotherapy : investigating the different mechanisms behind radiation induced cell deaths
Sammanfattning : Background. Radiation therapy is an important treatment regimen for malignant disease. Radiation therapy uses ionizing radiation to induce DNA damage in tumor cells in order to kill them. LÄS MER
7. Modelling of radiation damage and positron annihilation in metallic materials
Sammanfattning : The radiation damage is one of the key concerns in the research of materials used in radiation environments. In this thesis, we theoretically investigate the radiation damage phenomenon by focusing on two important topics: the defect production and evolution, and the defect characterization. The first part aims at two aspects. LÄS MER
8. Formation and repair of complex DNA damage induced by ionizing radiation
Sammanfattning : DNA is the critical target when cells are exposed to ionizing radiation, a potent stressor with capacity to produce complex DNA damages, thereby increasing the risk of cancer. DNA and associated histones form chromatin, which is an effective protection against ionizing radiation. LÄS MER
9. Damage mechanisms for near-infrared radiation induced cataract
Sammanfattning : Purpose: 1) To estimate the threshold dose and the time evolution for cataract induction by near infrared radiation (IRR) in seconds exposure time domain; 2) to determine the ocular temperature development during the threshold exposure; 3) to investigate if near IRR induces cumulative lens damage considering irradiance exposure time reciprocity; 4) to experimentally estimate the temperature in the lens indirectly from the measurement of temperature-induced light scattering increase. Methods: Before exposure, 6-weeks-old albino rats were anesthetized and the pupils of both eyes were dilated. 10. Factors modifying cellular response to ionizing radiation
Sammanfattning : Many physical factors influence the biological effect of exposure to ionizing radiation, including radiation quality, dose rate and temperature. This thesis focuses on how these factors influence the outcome of exposure and the mechanisms behind the cellular response. LÄS MER
