  1. 1. Deciphering neural networks in the somatosensory system using single-cell transcriptomics and rabies tracing

    Författare :Jon E. T. Jakobsson; Malin C. Lagerström; Victoria Abraira; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; neural networks; somatosensory system; itch; rabies tracing; scRNA-seq;

    Sammanfattning : Itch has evolved to protect us from malicious parasites keen to suck our blood or lay their eggs in our skin. We can detect both the movement of these parasites and the toxins they introduce with specialized neurons called pruriceptors. When we feel an itch, we get a desire to scratch it. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Somatosensory Circuits in the Central Nervous System

    Författare :Hannah M. Weman; Malin C. Lagerström; Sarah E. Ross; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Glycine receptor alpha 3; urocortin 3; vesicular monoaminergic transporter 2; nociception; pruriception; spinal cord; somatosensory cortex; DREADD; rabies tracing; transcriptomics; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Spinal glycinergic neurons prevent spontaneous sensations of pain and itch, and development of persistent pain and itch conditions. The glycine receptor alpha 3 subunit (GLRA3) is suggested to be involved in certain inflammatory models, but not in acute nociception. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Cell Replacement Therapy for Parkinson's Disease: Potential for Circuitry Repair

    Författare :Tiago Cardoso; Utvecklings- och regenerativ neurobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Rabies-based tracing; Parkinson s disease cell therapy; Cell Replacement Therapy; Human embryonic stem cells; Dopamine neuron; Synaptic integration; circuitry repair;

    Sammanfattning : The derivation of dopamine neurons from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) now offers a promising alternative to fetal tissue for cell replacement therapy (CRT) in Parkinson´s disease (PD). Using the appropriate chemical cues in vitro, hESCs can be patterned towards bona-fide ventral midbrain (VM) DA neurons that survive, reinnervate, release DA and provide functional recovery when transplanted into rodent and non-human primate models of PD. 4. 4. On the neuronal basis of cognition : cell-type specific circuitry and functions of the prefrontal cortex

    Författare :Sofie Ährlund-Richter; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis recapitulates the history of research, and current knowledge, of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in order to provide a context for the included scientific articles. The evident, but ill-defined, symptoms of a perturbation of the PFC is still a conundrum to neuroscientists. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Therapeutic potential of extracellular vesicles

    Författare :Oscar Wiklander; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nanometer-sized, lipid membrane enclosed, vesicles that are secreted by most, if not all, cells and contain macromolecular material of the source cell including lipids, proteins and various nucleic acid species. Over the last two decades, EVs have been recognized as important mediators of cell-to-cell communication that influence both physiological and pathological conditions. LÄS MER
