11. Quantum Hall Skyrmions and Edge Spin Textures
Sammanfattning : In the quantum Hall effect, new and surprising phenomena continue to be uncovered. For example, in quantum Hall ferromagnets Skyrmions have been observed---these quasiparticles carry electric charge and a large spin. The spin is ordered in a beautiful wavelike pattern, as shown on the front of this thesis. LÄS MER
12. Nanoscale YBa2Cu3O7-δ devices -Searching for a subdominant order parameter using a single electron transistor
Sammanfattning : The microscopic origin of High critical Temperature Superconductivity (HTS) is still an open issue in condensed matter physics. It is believed that by exlporing the quasiparticle energy spectrum one can learn about the mechanism promoting the superconducting state. LÄS MER
13. Exciton-plasmon interactions in metal-semiconductor nanostructures
Sammanfattning : Semiconductor quantum dots and metal nanoparticles feature very strong light-matter interactions, which has led to their use in many photonic applications such as photodetectors, biosensors, components for telecommunications etc.Under illumination both structures exhibit collective electron-photon resonances, described in the frameworks of quasiparticles as exciton-polaritons for semiconductors and surface plasmon-polaritons for metals. 14. Strong Correlation Effects in Bosonic and Fermionic Systems Through an Unbiased Quantum Monte Carlo Approach
Sammanfattning : Strongly interacting many-body quantum systems constitute some of the most challenging problems in physics, and exact analytical solutions are rare. In this thesis, we will investigate the models of two such systems numerically using the unbiased worm-algorithm Monte Carlo method. LÄS MER
15. Picosecond Infrared Detection and Optical Mixing in YBa2Cu3O7-δ Thin Films
Sammanfattning : Studies of infrared photoresponse in high Tc superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-.delta. (YBCO) thin films are presented in this dissertation. LÄS MER
